Lexus named most reliable car brand by Consumer Reports; Tesla & Lincoln come in last

Lexus has come out on top in Consumer Report's annual reliability rankings. According to the study, Lexus dethroned last year's winner, Mazda, to become the most reliable car brand. Mazda came in second while Toyota completed the top 3 slots.

The win by Lexus was boosted by the perfect reliability score of 100 awarded to its GX model lineup. Mazda models such as the MX-5 Miata and CX-9 scored 88 and 85 respectively. Toyota's Prius Prime, Venza and Highlander also secured good scores, however, its Corolla hatchback did bring the average down after securing just 27 out of the total 100 points.

In fact, 8 of the top 10 on the list are Japanese car brands, with Buick in 5th and MINI in 10th being the only exception.

On the opposite side of the scale were Jeep, Tesla and Lincoln. Jeep and Tesla scored 26 and 25 points respectively while Lincoln came in last with just 18 points.

Not necessarily. Don't know how they end up with the rating, but I guess the Corolla and the Rav4 end up being sold more and will have a larger sampling of issues. Doesn't mean they are unreliable.

Also the GX which scored a perfect score is a long running model, launched in late 2000s with an engine from the mid 2000s. So no surprise for the perfect score.

Surprised with Tesla's low reliability scores. Isn't an electric car far less complex than an ICE car ? Most things are controlled by software anyway. I was thinking that the reliability advantage of Japanese manufacturers will get nullified when world moves to electric. This result makes me believe that , once the traditional reliable auto manufacturers dives full on to EVs, Tesla may have problems even with that first mover advantage.

Not quite... Consumer Reports measures issues per 1000 vehicles. So the volume sellers will not be adversely affected by this measure.

There's so much demand and a huge backlog so the cars are made and delivered in a rush. Fit and finish is average to poor and plenty of little issues (software or hardware) can crop up. Yet Tesla buyers tend to be almost evangelical in their love for the brand, so they tend to overlook these things. When other brands start doing EVs and autonomous driving more seriously, Tesla won't be able to keep up.

According to the report, the Mazda3 played spoilsport along with the Corolla hatchback and the Siena. I believe mass market products of most brands are gradually going south w.r.t quality. I'd say it is because of

1. design changes that might impact reliability
2. quality dips due to cost pressures

Remember how many issues were reported in the Etios in the initial months? Goes to show that even the invincible can experience upsets. However, it is still encouraging to see 8 of the top 10 as Japanese brands.

I'd put the level of complexity of an EV far greater than an ICE car. Electronics + software + the final product working in non-ideal conditions = issues. Add to that is the low competence of service staff and what we end up with is huge dissatisfaction.

Re: Lexus named most reliable car brand by Consumer Reports; Tesla & Lincoln come in last

They ranked 28 brands. Hot sellers in India, Hyundai and Kia are average at 11 and mediocre at 19 respectively.
Hyundai's own luxury arm Genesis is 4th from bottom. Other offshoot luxury brands of mainstream Asian brands are much higher though : Lexus at 1st, Infiniti at 4th and Acura at 8th.
Amongst Germans, its the Porsche that ranks highest which reflects a general opinion on this very forum too.
Mini at 10th spot is also a surprise. A brand not known for reliability. It looks like they have made good progress last few years. My daily driven 2012 Cooper with 50k miles never broke down even when driven hard and regular maintenance costs were on-par with Subaru Outback. But I have heard horror stories of Minis of that vintage. Touch wood.

Crowd favorite and money minting, expensive vehicles like Jeep and Tesla round up bottom three. Just shows that laws don't apply on certain brands. People will line up no matter what.

Re: Lexus named most reliable car brand by Consumer Reports; Tesla & Lincoln come in last

Don't know why Tesla is so far behind. There was another rating recently which gave high marks to Tesla. Can't say about others but my son's 3 Year old Model 3 has almost Zero problems in about 50K he has driven. The only issue I am aware is slight squeak from the steering while turning at low speeds which was addressed in service at 40K mark. He is super happy, the only charges he has to pay on maintenance at 20K interval are for some cabin filters and break pad cleaning. I may be missing some other incidental charges but nothing as compared with regular IC engines.

Can't agree more with Lexus though, my wife's GX driven over 80K had Zero issues, only a couple of recalls including infamous AirBags. However regular service is expensive when done at Lexus showrooms. Toyota dealers will do the same at much cheaper but she will prefer the convenience of getting done at Lexus.

If I compare this with BMW's that I had owned, usually battery related issues crop up the most on Germans. This can be due to limited usage. But overall, happy with BMW in India at least. Regular service costs are also very reasonable.

To give an idea, my M5 came back from yearly service yesterday, total amount with Oil change was 20K Plus taxes. It drank 10 ltr of Engine oil which is little expensive at 1400 per ltr . But I have paid similar amounts on servicing of my GSA to the Mottorad dealerships.

Full ranking for the reliability of car brands in USA in 2021.

It was made by Consumer Reports and includes the feedback from 300,000 members. They reported the inconveniences, problems, issues they had with their brand-new cars over the last 12 months.

Of the top 10 most reliable car brands, eight are headquartered in Asia.

study 17 trouble areas, from nuisances—such as squeaky brakes and broken interior trim—to major bummers, like out-of-warranty transmission repairs or trouble with four-wheel-drive systems. We weigh the severity of each type of problem to create a predicted reliability score for each vehicle, from 1 to 100. (That score is then combined with data collected from our track testing, as well as our owner satisfaction survey results and safety data, to calculate each test vehicle’s Overall Score.) To be considered for this list, we must have at least two model years of data in calculating the predicted reliability score

Tesla, the least reliable car brand in Europe.

Asian brands are once again the champions of reliability, with nine manufacturers at the top of the most reliable.

The top nine brands in the ranking are Asian (seven of them Japanese) and that the most reliable European brand in this ranking is SEAT, which with a reliability index of 85 surpasses Dacia and Škoda.

Re: Lexus named most reliable car brand by Consumer Reports; Tesla & Lincoln come in last

Toyota most trusted brand by dealers, Ford and Nissan least trusted.

Dissatisfied with Ford's EV strategy, dealers anticipate a decline in the value of the automaker's dealerships, while they hold optimistic expectations for showrooms selling Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

America’s car dealers have high hopes for the automotive industry in 2024, new research has found. Of the 650 dealers it surveyed anonymously, 52 percent are expecting their businesses’ valuations to stay high over the next 12 months. The strong performance, and the expectation that the good times will keep on rolling, means that dealers are looking to invest in their businesses.

The automotive brands dealers expect to gain the most are Kia, Hyundai, Lexus, Toyota, and Porsche. In fact, 44 percent of dealers expected the valuation of Kia dealerships to increase, which is twice the industry average.

Quote:
However, Kia and Hyundai weren’t among the brands the dealers trusted the most. That honor goes to Toyota and Lexus. When surveyed, a staggering 72 percent of dealers expressed a high level of trust in the Japanese automaker, three times more than the industry average.
Quote:
much of this disparity comes down to the brands’ differing approaches to electrification. Dealers remain unhappy about automakers’ EV strategies, especially as the vehicles have started lingering on lots for longer, making Toyota’s slow and steady approach appealing to them.

This discontent is reflected in the list of brands dealers trust the least. Topping the charts are Ford and Lincoln, which were also the brands whose valuations were the least expected to increase. That may explain why the automaker is revisiting its EV plans.

The 10 least reliable cars, (Three of them are Jeeps)

The results don’t make comfortable viewing for Stellantis, whose products occupy four of the 10 available spots.

Quote:
probably not surprised to learn that there are no Honda, Toyota or Lexus vehicles in the list of top 10 , and the only entry from a Japanese brand is the Nissan Frontier pickup (seventh spot), which scored better than the two other pickups on the list, they are being the Ford F-150 hybrid (third) and our only EV villain, the Rivian R1T (fifth).
