Honda unveiled its new-generation BR-V SUV last month. Towards the end of the unveiling, the carmaker also teased a mystery SUV with smaller overall dimensions.



Now, according to media reports, the concept version of this mystery SUV is expected to make its debut at the upcoming 2021 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). The production version of the SUV, however, will be revealed sometime by mid-2022.

Dubbed the ZR-V, the new model will be positioned below the new-gen BR-V and will take on rivals in the competitive sub-4-metre compact-SUV segment. The new Honda ZR-V is expected to carry forward the same architecture as the new-gen BR-V model, while also borrowing a number of exterior and interior design cues.



While details of the new compact-SUV are scarce, the Honda ZR-V is expected to be powered by a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated i-VTEC engine borrowed from the Amaze.

The Honda ZR-V could also make its way to the Indian market. If it does, it will take on the likes of the Kia Sonet, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Toyota Urban Cruiser and the Hyundai Venue; among others.

The car's face looks much better than the WR-V IMHO. IF (big IF) this ever makes it's way to the Indian shores, will this be the end of the road for the WR-V then?

What Honda needs in the sub 4-m segment is a small capacity turbo petrol. The 1.2 NA petrol from the Amaze does not cut it anymore. The competition has moved to turbo petrols years ago.

IF (again, big IF) they ever launch it, Honda will make sure the car will be dead on arrival with their choice of engine and gearbox combos. They have the engines and the gearboxes in all sizes and transmissions, they are not too bothered about plonking the right one in the right vehicle.

Honda needs to ditch the _R-V name. The glory days of the original CRV are long gone, and the name commands zero aspirational value. There is a lot of baggage of the disasters called BRV and the latest CRV. Too much negativity, in a very Tata Indica kind of way. They need to wipe the slate clean.

On a similar note, if Honda decides to persist with the anaemic 1.2 iVTEC against the modern turbo petrols of the competition, the product will die in no time.

I see "RS" lettering in the reveal's nameplate. Surely (at least hopefully), that wouldn't go with the anaemic 1.2 NA engine?!

If Honda fails to launch this vehicle in India they might as well pack their bags and leave. Given how competitive the sub-4m crossover market is Honda needs their fair share of the market, something the WR-V simply doesn't bring.

I sincerely hope they launch it with their 1.0 turbo petrol as an option at least.

Honda has completely lost the plot for the Indian market. A decade earlier, one of the premium car brands and aspirational for many of us are unable to understand the Indian market well in today's time.

Simply put for comparison, Hyundai and Honda have entered the Indian market at the same time (1995-1997), however, today former is ruling the market and the latter is struggling to survive.

Honda has become a 'zero' risk-taking company (can be seen from their offerings) and is not able to come up with new creative names for their cars, new colors for their cars, new configuration mix, etc. Even they are not ready to bring the Turbo Engine (RS badge) to the Indian market which is already available in other markets (Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc.). They could have brought RS to Civic and City. Volumes could have been different. City Hatch launched in Thailand earlier this year, in India, it seems no plans to bring that next-level premium hatch.

With non-aggressiveness and taking the Indian market for granted leads me to foresee 'next could be Honda' who will be packing their bags soon.

Honda is closing their Car Manufacturing plants rapidly. Honda Turkey and Honda Swindon Plants which were in operation for 25-30 years have been brought to closure in the 3rd Quarter (Jul-Sep'21).

The company has not released any details but we can assume that the ZR-V will share the BR-V’s 121 PS/145 Nm 1.5 litre DOHC i-VTEC engine and CVT (the Thai City‘s 122 PS/173 Nm 1.0 litre turbocharged three-cylinder is also possible given the forced-induction competition, as is the e:HEV hybrid powertrain).

expect the car to come with the Honda Sensing suite of active safety features, including autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. In India, the ZR-V will likely replace the Jazz-based WR-V, giving the market a bona fide SUV for a change.

Between the Honda ZR-V and WR-V, which one will Honda Indonesia debut this week?

Regardless of which name the new model will be getting, the new SUV will be sharing its platform with the Honda BR-V and will wear the N5X codename – not too far off the all-new Honda BR-V’s N7X codename.

more than a year ago, Honda filed for the ZR-V name in several countries, including in Australia. This led to speculations that Honda could be planning for a Toyota Raize/Daihatsu Rocky rival, positioned below the Honda HR-V.

On the other hand, rumours out of Indonesia mentioned that Honda has plans to introduce a second-generation Honda WR-V, one that is very different from the current model.

Honda's SUV breaks cover in Indonesia, SUV RS- Concept:

Looks to be a Mid Sized SUV to take on Hyundai Creta , Kia Seltos and the rest. To be the SUV for India too.

Being a concept car, Honda didn’t give any detail as to the SUV RS Concept’s running gear, but it is likely related to the just-released BR-V. If Honda does bring this small SUV into production, it will likely carry the ZR-V nameplate.

Depending on its positioning in the Honda pricing ladder, it could either be powered by a 1.5-liter DOHC i-VTEC engine shared with the BR-V, or it could gain the Brio’s 1.2-liter 4-cylinder engine

Many similarities with the Kia Sonet concept when it originally debuted!

However, looks like a proper sub-4m design and not an overstyled jacked up hatchback like the W-RV. Hoping to see this in India as well soon, with competitive engines.
