Gas station pumps ran dry in major British cities on Monday and vendors rationed sales as a shortage of truckers strained supply chains to breaking point in the world's fifth-largest economy.

A dire post-Brexit shortage of lorry drivers revealed as the COVID-19 pandemic eases has sown chaos through British supply chains in everything from food to fuel, raising the spectre of disruptions and price rises in the run up to Christmas.

Drivers queued for hours to fill their cars at gas stations that were still serving fuel, albeit often rationed, and there were calls for National Health Service (NHS) workers to be given priority, to keep hospitals open as the pandemic continues.

This issue is because of Brexit as now the drivers need visas to work in UK.

Also, gas prices have been on the rise but till now regulation has ensured that there is a limit up to which the consumers can be charged.

After seeing this I was planning to get a HGV driver's license. It has been a long time dream to drive a big truck someday and this seems to be the perfect situation.

It's a manmade crisis. This was predicted by some people and the egos are high to accept the fact. Now the transportation department days they will arrange to give 5000 temporary visas for truck drivers.

The problem is really a problem when those in power don't acknowledge that there is a Problem!

5k visas won’t cut it as they need more than 150k HGV driver’s.

Power crisis in China and this in UK, god knows what is coming next for humanity.

Is it not a bit too late to fulfill your dreams ? You may get a Licence, but not the fuel required to run your big Truck.
Have you wondered if the Trucks required to bring in fuel would get fuel to operate ? Or the Drivers and other Logistics & Maintenance personnel would get fuel to drive and attend to their duties .

On a more serious note, the messaging is all over the place. Some say its a genuine truck driver shortage while others say that the shortage was caused by drivers rushing to the pumps to fill their tanks because of rumors.

Leaving a closely knit bloc like the EU after almost 5 decades has repercussions, who would've thought?

It is clearly a problem of bringing the fuel to the pump, rather than the shortage of the fuel itself at the depot or production facility.

New measures to further ease fuel supply chain pressures, have been announced overnight.

The UK government has announced further measures to help further ease supply chain pressures and spikes in localised demand for fuel.

* Limited number of military tanker drivers to be put on a state of readiness and deployed if necessary to further stabilise fuel supply chain
* Extension to ADR driver licences, permitting drivers to maximise their available capacity instead of being taken out of circulation for refresher training purposes
* Next step comes after relaxation of competition rules and package of measures to speed recruitment of HGV drivers

There was a joke going around of a truck driver who spent 5 hours around London to get fuel and people said instead he should have sat at home and he would have had 5 hours of fuel left with him..

If only there was some kind of coalition of countries, a union if you will, where they could requisition drivers from neighboring countries like France and Germany to assist in distributing these types of essential goods.

Sounds like a brilliant idea, they should think about it.
