Volkswagen to end Manual Gearbox by 2030 (USA, Europe, China)

As the era of EV's is in a fierce stage in matured markets, companies are slowly but steadily in the phase of getting rid of ICE before the switch to an all-electric lineup. Most are switching off the diesels in the first phase.

The end of combustion engines also means that manual transmissions are dying out.

By 2030 at the latest, when VW will only offer electric cars in Europe, there will be no more manual switches – presumably also at the Group brands.

For VW, this means that for the European market as well as in the USA and China, no model with a manual transmission is likely to be available for a classic model cycle from 2030.

- VW is interested in cutting costs and has sought to save money by simplifying drivetrain offerings. It's prioritizing the DSG to the detriment of manuals

- The first model completely without a clutch pedal will be the 3rd generation of the VW Tiguan from 2023.

-As a further model, the VW Passat follows in the same year.

- Other vehicle series will also be offered with the next model generation without manual transmission

- With the switch off, Volkswagen is also following Mercedes.

Quote:
the decision goes hand in hand with the Transformation of the Group towards electromobility. VW will only offer electric cars in Europe by 2033 at the latest. These usually have input gearboxes.
Quote:
out of a total of 5,838 models across all manufacturers, only 1,870 vehicles with manual transmission are currently on offer in Germany.
Of these, 218 with five-speed and 1,652 with six-speed transmissions.
With a total of 353 VW models from 15 model series – without Multivan – 214 are currently equipped with automatic (incl. DSG) and 139 with a manual transmission. For the Passat, the quota is eight switches to 21 automatic versions, for Tiguan 18:31 and for Allspace 2:13

Maybe in the larger markets. Also, some of them are predominantly AT markets like the USA where ATs make up 99% of sales. In the price sensitive countries like India though, VW-Skoda will have to continue offering MTs as it is 1-lakh cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain and also cheaper to run (torque-converter ATs can guzzle).

Hey GTO , replying to you for the first time .

Its understood that the automatic transmission will always be costlier than a manual but wont the shift by all the major manufacturers to auto transmission result in a cheaper auto transmission due to the volumes maybe bringing down their prices by around 25-30%. for example the airbags and ABS modules.

However all these transmissions wont matter in a decade as everybody's cars will be running on Eveready/Duracell(pun intended) with no actual transmissions.

Too late in the day for VW to take such a decision that overtly appears to be bereft of logic. Markets where MT's sell well need to be left untouched.

Too late in the day because Europe, among the largest market for VW will herald the alternate fuel era by 2035. Yes the EU has decided to stop manufacturing ICE cars come 2035.

Another possibility is that they might be going for a Hybrid only power train offerings for the next gen Tiguan / Passat instead of the current DSG and Manual transmission options. Helps them hit the fleet CO2 goals in EU as despite their MEB offensive, not every Audi / Tiguan / Passat customer would like to buy an EV in the next few years. Also these models being the ones with higher CO2 emission in their fleet, makes economic sense for them to have hybrids there.
