Volkswagen to end Manual Gearbox by 2030 (USA, Europe, China) As the era of EV's is in a fierce stage in matured markets, companies are slowly but steadily in the phase of getting rid of ICE before the switch to an all-electric lineup. Most are switching off the diesels in the first phase.
The end of combustion engines also means that manual transmissions are dying out.
By 2030 at the latest, when VW will only offer electric cars in Europe, there will be no more manual switches – presumably also at the Group brands.
For VW, this means that for the European market as well as in the USA and China, no model with a manual transmission is likely to be available for a classic model cycle from 2030.
- VW is interested in cutting costs and has sought to save money by simplifying drivetrain offerings. It's prioritizing the DSG to the detriment of manuals
- The first model completely without a clutch pedal will be the 3rd generation of the VW Tiguan from 2023.
-As a further model, the VW Passat follows in the same year.
- Other vehicle series will also be offered with the next model generation without manual transmission
- With the switch off, Volkswagen is also following Mercedes. Quote:
the decision goes hand in hand with the Transformation of the Group towards electromobility. VW will only offer electric cars in Europe by 2033 at the latest. These usually have input gearboxes.

out of a total of 5,838 models across all manufacturers, only 1,870 vehicles with manual transmission are currently on offer in Germany.
Of these, 218 with five-speed and 1,652 with six-speed transmissions.
With a total of 353 VW models from 15 model series – without Multivan – 214 are currently equipped with automatic (incl. DSG) and 139 with a manual transmission. For the Passat, the quota is eight switches to 21 automatic versions, for Tiguan 18:31 and for Allspace 2:13
