2022 Volkswagen Jetta & Jetta GLI unveiled with updated engine & design

Volkswagen has unveiled the 2022 Jetta and Jetta GLI models for the American market. The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta now features a bunch of subtle design and styling updates, along with a revised engine as well.

The 2022 Jetta comes with new front and rear bumpers, a revised front grille with additional chrome slats and new alloy wheel design options. The GLI trim further comes with a modified rear diffuser with a honeycomb pattern, dual exhaust tips and sporty red accents all around.

On the Inside, the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta features updated seats, fresh upholstery choices, a new steering wheel with touch controls, a new gear shifter design and a fully digital instrument cluster. Volkswagen also offers the 2022 Jetta with a bunch of driver-assistance features and equipment. Some of these include automated emergency braking, rear traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring, among others.

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta now comes with an updated powertrain. This is in the form of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 158 BHP and 249 Nm, paired with either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission.

India badly misses this sedan. Cant VW bring limited units under that 2500 units the way they brought T-roc? I think there is still a market which can be milked by such offering.

Yes, I totally agree to this; there is a huge void left in the sedan space after the City, directly to the Octavia! (The Elantra IMHO isn't worth it over the Verna, and is due for replacement anyway)

However, unfortunately, it'll never happen. This is because, the 7th gen Jetta is LHD only, and wasn't even launched in Europe. As a result, it'll never make it to India.

Re: 2022 Volkswagen Jetta & Jetta GLI unveiled with updated engine & design

It's so sad that such a potent car will never make it to our shores. Volkswagen has such good products globally but with the kind of volumes, they do in India, justifying a premium car offering for India is not on cards.

I guess a lot is riding for VW on Taigun in India but somehow I feel that VW will again do a pricing blunder and reviving of VW brand in India will remain a dream.

Those headlights + drooping grill integration actually reminds me of today's Sandero's and Logan's, or may be the pictures aren't doing justice. That said today's Dacia's look good too.

This one would have been an interesting addition to VW India's lineup, sadly it's exclusively LHD like the VW Atlas/Teramont.

Hoping the upcoming Virtus gets some GLI inspiration from this good looking sedan.

Is it just me or the red one looks like a VW Charger? While the specifications on paper do look spicy, the front is overdone. 5th and 6th gen were the best looking ones and luckily we had both in India.

Re: 2022 Volkswagen Jetta & Jetta GLI unveiled with updated engine & design

This is our 2012~2013 Mk6 Jetta. ~8 yrs old, ~62k KMs clocked, still drives like new.

Gem of a car. Jetta would've seen good sales had it been continued in the India. I still feel there's a reasonably good customer base with cash ready to spend on this car, if VW brings it to India.

The sheer quality of the car, in all aspects, interiors, body, paint, engine, suspension are sorely missed today.

I hope VW realises what I'm trying to say.

Like always, VW has kept the interior modest, and am sure the quality would be top notch. The instrument cluster is still conventional which is good.

However, like BMW, the grille has been spoilt, and it looks horrendous. The grille on the T-Roc is about as big as VW should go, in my view.

Looks superb even after eight years. My only grouse - please fix that wheel center VW ornament on the left front wheel. The car looks bad without that.

I second that opinion. The old model looks much elegant and classy. The grill on the new one, looks bad. The side and rear are good again.

Thank You for your kind words. Yes Sir, the SA quoted ~2k for a single centre cap. So we backed off at the moment as it wasn't essential and already had a hefty bill to pay (some repair + annual service). I'll get both, the number plate and wheel center cap replaced in the coming months.

I find the latest Jetta absolutely correct to look at.

While I am myself a big fan of the Jetta, I can see why VW isn't bothering with this car in India. If I am not wrong, they pulled out the Jetta from many EU markets too.

They already have the Skoda Octavia here and with the numbers that car does, I think VW struggles to justify assembling another sedan in that price range.

Crossovers/SUVs in the same price range sell so much more. It's just a harsh world out there for sedan lovers.

Problem is there is hardly any demand for executive sedans in India. With what these Jetta / Octavia today is offering in comparison with Big 3 the gap has reduced considerably and so is the pricing. So the numbers in this segment will anyway be really less.
Add to that there is Octavia which is almost similar to what Jetta will offer. So unfortunately don't think Jetta will ever come back to India, at least in near future.

Count me as well. Older grill looked classic. Thus looks horrendous. I wonder what makes almost all manufacturers go for large grills?

Re: 2022 Volkswagen Jetta & Jetta GLI unveiled with updated engine & design

It's like watching one of those actresses from LA - beautiful when introduced, then as the years passed by, plastic surgery after plastic surgery, until the face is no longer recognizable as a human. The face of this 2022 Jetta is not recognizable as 'a car' - more resemblance to an ocean-bottom-debris-eater-fish.

Re: 2022 Volkswagen Jetta & Jetta GLI unveiled with updated engine & design

South Korean market left-hand drive 2021 Volkswagen Jetta shows shockingly in poor performance Korea NCAP tests.

Scores 1 star for occupant protection, 4 stars for vulnerable road user protection and 1 stars for safety assist (no pedestrian AEB).

The car scored 0.00 points out of 16 (like the Tiguan) in the full-width frontal test since the front passenger head showed poor protection and the rear-seat passenger's head and chest showed poor protection.

Tested for front full-width rigid barrier impact at 56km/h, frontal offset deformable barrier at 64km/h, AE-MDB (1400kg type) side impact at 60km/h, oblique pole test at 32km/h, low-speed whiplash pulse sled test at 16km/h, pedestrian headform and lower legform tests and for interurban AEB tests.

Awarded an overall 5th-grade rating, the lowest possible.
