GM testing hands-free towing & other features on its Super Cruise tech; rollout in 2022 General Motors is set to be testing a bunch of new features, to be introduced on the Super Cruise tech - the company's hands-free driver assistance system. According to a media report, these features include automatic lane change assist and hands-free towing capabilities.
Reports suggest that the updated 'Super Cruise' driver-assistance system will be rolled out on six vehicles initially in 2022, including the upcoming GMC Hummer EV pickup, GMC Sierra, Cadillac Silverado and a few others. The company will then expand the availability of the Super Cruise tech to 22 vehicles in 2023.
The Super Cruise technology is GM's driver-assistance system, which works by combining Lidar, high-precision GPS, cameras and radar sensors. The system allows the driver to take his hands off the steering wheel completely when the system is active. However, the tech does come with a driver attention system, which means the driver will have to still concentrate on the road ahead.
The 2022 vehicles with the updated Super Cruise technology will feature automatic lane changing, which is done autonomously by the system, without the need for any prompts by the driver via the turn indicator. The system will automatically detect a slower vehicle in front and change lanes on its own. Having said that, the driver will be required to prompt a lane change when having a trailer hooked up.
The second update is that Super Cruise will officially be the first driver-assistance system to be capable of functioning while towing a trailer. When hooked up with a trailer, the Super Cruise tech will automatically adjust its parameters to compensate for the added weight at the back.
The upgrades on the Super Cruise is said to be possible because of GM's updated digital platform, called VIP (Vehicle Intelligent Platform). This updated platform offers more bandwidth and data processing power to add the new features. The Super Cruise will also be capable of receiving over-the-air updates, to add more features in the future.
