Australia: New camera tech detects phone/seatbelt offences

The state of Queensland in Australia is believed to be the world's first jurisdiction to use a fixed-camera technology to detect seatbelt offences.

According to a media report, the new smart camera technology has been rolled out across the entire state. While the exact number of cameras in operation hasn't been revealed, authorities did state that it will be used without any warning sign.

Reports suggested that the authorities in the state will issue only warnings in the first three months. However, post the grace period, drivers will be fined AUS$ 1033 & 4 demerit points for using mobile phones and AUS$ 413 and 3 demerit points for not wearing a seatbelt.

As per reports, the cameras will be mounted above the roads and will automatically capture images of every passing car's front windscreen. The artificial intelligence technology will then flag those where it detects the driver is either using a phone or not wearing a seatbelt. The images which are not flagged will be deleted.

The flagged images are further checked by a person, before being sent for infringement. Drivers will also be sent a copy of the photo to protest, in case the technology does make an error.

These cameras will also be used on portable poles mounted on a small trailer. These portable trailers can be parked at different locations on the roadside across highways, rural areas and even city suburbs and will have a higher chance of catching a driver violating the rules.

The introduction of these new camera technologies comes following a trial period between July - December 2020. During this period, the technology monitored 4.8 million vehicle movements, detecting 15,000 mobile phone offences and 2,200 seatbelt offences.

AI driven cameras are already installed on the Mumbai Pune expressway to catch such offenders since Dec 2020

AI cameras have been long installed in Kolkata too, I can remember at least 2018 already we had them. Also, I have seen in China the numerous AI based cameras they use on their highways. I guess there are at least 12-15 cameras which track one individual vehicle at a time. And they use machine learning algorithm to sort them out. This was also shown in The Grand Tour episode on Chinese city Chonqing I think.
