You can buy an almost-new Mercedes W124 for $60,000

Mechatronik - a German car dealer specialising in classic Mercedes-Benz models, has listed an almost-new W124 230E sedan for sale. The 'new' 1987 Mercedes-Benz W124 230E is said to have only 995 km on the odometer and has been priced at around $60,000.

As per the German dealer, the almost-new W124 is said to have been a showcase vehicle at a local dealership back in 1987. A year after being in the showroom, the car was sent into storage, having remained there for nearly 33 years now. The W124 is said to be in pristine condition and unused, hence being sold as a 'new' car.

The 1987 Mercedes-Benz W124 230E comes finished in '735 Astralsilber' paintwork. Inside, the seats are finished in grey fabric upholstery, while the centre console features wood inlays. The W124 is also said to come with features such as a sunroof, anti-lock braking system (ABS), automatic locking differential and a basic radio & audio system; among others.

My question was regarding registration of this particular vehicle in home country only. Like any restrictions we have in India, recent example is restriction to register BS-IV after cut-off time.

What a beauty! Rarest of rare examples, it is.

However, this is the first time I've seen a W124 with manual window winding operation. All other W124's images I've seen thus far have power buttons for winding the windows.

As a collectors edition to showcase this car, it will be a fine collection. But, if one intend to use this car, I will not prefer a 33 years old car which has been seating idle throughout its life.

I have no idea how well the dealer has restored this car before putting it on sell, though it mentions as- they are specialized for classic Mercedes-Benz.
I feel, I am being paranoid over here.
But still, I personally prefer cars which were never kept idle throughout their life. For me a 33 years old car can't be 'new', it can be rather a 33 years old 'unused/unsold' car!

This is indeed a thing of beauty. This particular car gives us an idea of how the stock car was from that era. Chances are Mercedes or some car museum will get this one.

Most probably this will go into the collection of another collector and will be up for sale 30 years from now So no need to register I guess. On the other hand there might be ways to alter the car to make sure it meets the latest emission standards. But I guess this stock 1987 car is best left untouched.

Check out the original seat fabric that came out in 1987 !

Re: You can buy an almost-new Mercedes W124 for $60,000

The only kind of customers for this car would be people with some kind of emotional attachment to it. Say, you grew up admiring one, owned one then or your Dad / neighbour drove a W124. Personally, I'd get a W126 from the same era and if I wanted a W124, a later model E500. There are a few which pop up from time to time. Would be cheaper and I'd have spare cash for maintenance!

Even though it’s an excellent collector’s item, I would never buy a car that has been sitting idle for so many years, it must have developed a lot of underlying issues.

Re: You can buy an almost-new Mercedes W124 for $60,000

Even if the odometer reading is genuine, the car was sitting abandoned / neglected for 33 years. So unless someone who has the financial backup to rectify all future issues that may arise because of this, it seems to be a wrong choice. Ofcourse, that is listening to only what the head says.

A late quote!!!!
W124's were sold with plethora of options over the years.
Non Power Window and Even Non Ac Models were quite common in European countries. Taxi Spec cars did not have power windows.
A friend of mine in Chandigarh, owns one such car, and it has been documented here nice and proper in a restoration thread.
