Re: Sports Utility Coupé - The next big thing?

With the XUV900 in the works looks like this trend is coming to the mass market. What Indian customers love is to differentiate themselves based on their vehicle choices. First it was Sedans and compact sedans, now it's SUVs and C-SUVs, next it could be these Coupe SUVs. I can see the Mahindras and Hyundais (No 1 SUV maker in India) picking up these trends quickly and we could have Rs 15-20L Coupe SUVs in the next 2-3 years.

Re: Sports Utility Coupé - The next big thing?

SUV Coupés might be the next big thing for mass-market Indian cars as seen with the upcoming Mahindra models. I think the consumerization of the SUV Coupé so that the common man can afford a so to say 'chic' model is the next hyped trend that I see forthcoming in India.

On the other hand, luxury manufacturers have been selling coupé iterations for a while now so wouldn't call it the next big thing. The X6 is probably the most mainstream example that one can think of. I remember back in 2010 Mercedes tried offering the E Class in the Coupé version. Even though the car was stunning, it barely managed to get numbers. Will be very interesting to see how this works out for SUVs this time around!

Re: Sports Utility Coupé - The next big thing?

What is the real purpose of a 'coupe'-ing an SUV shape ?
(1) Is it aerodynamics (to reduce atleast 'some' drag that is already bad, given the ride height and huge frontal area) ?
(2) Is it aesthetics ? (a questionable sense of, if I may add)

Re: Sports Utility Coupé - The next big thing?

I would say to the OP this trend is not the 'next' big thing, if anything its a trend that in my opinion has seen its heyday and we may now be reverting to traditional 'boxy' SUVs once again.
Good riddance I'd say.. the only good thing that ever came out of these mostly abomination designs is the original X6, which If I remember correctly is what started the trend many years ago.

Apparently there are many reasons:
1. Aesthetics can be subjective: There are a niche group of people who think Coupé SUV looks cool. It will attract more customers especially younger generation.
2. Aerodynamics : For example ; The Audi e tron Sportback has more range than a regular e tron.
The Tesla model X has mind boggling range of 500 km per charge. So we can expect Coupé XUV to be more economical than a regular XUV.
3. Driving dynamics are slightly better than a regular SUV. But not sure about cars like XUV900 and future mainstream cars. The Merc GLC Coupé and X6 are brilliant handlers for its size, height and weight.

So what is the point of Coupé SUV ?
IMO, It is just for customers who want more ground clearance than a sedan.

Personally, I am not a big fan of it. I would rather go for regular SUV.

Re: Sports Utility Coupé - The next big thing?

I think Mahindra is pressing the right pedal by developing the XUV coupe. Soon there will be all manufacturers tapping this virgin segment in India.

This should be the next big thing in Indian auto industry after SUVs. Sedans has already lost its way here so if someone needs the macho looks of Suv along with sporty handling of sedan then a coupe is the answer.

On a lighter note the closest that comes to a coupe on Indian roads.

Re: Sports Utility Coupé - The next big thing?

In international markets, the coupe SUVs are also invading the midsize segments . The popular D-SUVs of Audi, BMW and Mercedes have also their SUV coupe versions.

It just gives a standout variant if the customer wishes so.

The Taigun/T Cross ( Classic SUV) or the Taigo ( SUV Coupé ) - which one has a better stance?

Noted that you mentioned it on a lighter note, but I think on the "budget" side of things - this is the one that comes the closest. On the premium side, there are quite a few examples already on our roads.

The Tigor is more of a budget take on the near-extinct "Fast-back" design.

Re: Sports Utility Coupé - The next big thing?

2021 Results: The coupe sedans, or what is called the Sport sedans from the E-Segment recorded sales of 297,000 units, almost doubling the volume posted in 2020.

China counted for 71% of the global demand.

As demand of SUVs continues to grow everywhere in the world, the car makers are trying to enlarge their offer by creating new segments. One of them is what is the coupe-SUVs, or the sporty SUVs.
Two of them are Audi Q3 Sportback, since 2019, and Volvo C40, introduced in 2021.

Re: Sports Utility Coupé - The next big thing?

Looks are subjective. I just love the space ship like aerodynamic curves of coupes. May India also see more of them in the mainstream options.

The Q3 sportback looks stunning and probably would do wonders for Audi if launched in India. I don't know why Audi is not bothered about bringing the A3 and Q3 twins to India

Renault Arkana was also spotted in India, not sure if Renault has any plans of launching it in India, discussed on T-Bhp renault-launch-arkana-suv-india (Renault to launch Arkana SUV in India?).
