Codenamed Project RJI, the seven-seater Duster will undergo production later this year in Romania

A few months ago Renault subsidiary, Dacia revealed the upcoming Bigster Concept which should pave the way for a larger three-row Duster. Post this development, a digital render of the same also surfaced on the internet and imagined as Grand Duster. It seems that the upcoming SUV has come out of imagination and is taking steps towards reality.

Dacia is planning to develop a seven-seat version of the crossover going by the name Grand Duster alongside a facelift to the current-gen standard Duster. For reference, Duster in international is in its second generation while the Indian market still gets the first-gen model. In markets where Dacia is not present, Duster is sold under Renault branding – like in India.

Expected global & India launch

Internally codenamed RJI, the seven-seater Grand Duster is likely to undergo production at Dacia’s manufacturing facility in Pitesti, Romania starting October 2021. Whereas it is expected to hit markets at the end of this year or early next year.

As far as launch in India is concerned, there has been no official update. But considering the success Renault has been meeting with their UVs in India, it is likely that they launch the 7 seater Duster in India sooner than later. Once launched in India, the 2022 Renault Grand Duster will be a direct rival to the likes of Tata Safari and Hyundai Alcazar.

Car on the left doesn't look any different from current 5 seater Duster to me, or am I missing to see the 3rd row in this snap?

OTOH car on the right has 4 wheel screw pattern (duster is 5 screws) and I don't think that's based on Duster (platform sharing is a different story)

The 4 lug appears to be similar to the flex wheel as seen on triber top model, but this vehicle looks bigger.

7-seater Renault Grand Duster spotted testing

Following the advent of the so-called 'compact SUV', most carmakers appear to have shifted their focus to the 7-seater SUV segment. We already have the Tata Safari and the MG Hector Plus. Soon, Hyundai will enter the fray with the Alcazar. Renault too is developing a 7-seat version of the Duster called the Grand Duster.



The Grand Duster (codenamed: Project RJI) was recently spotted testing in Europe. The 3-row SUV is based on the Dacia Bigster Concept.



The spy images suggest that the Grand Duster would be slightly longer than the regular SUV. It looks more like an MPV in these images, especially alongside the Duster. The car also has smaller diameter wheels.



The Grand Duster is likely to go on sale in Europe at the end of this year. It is unclear if Renault would offer it in India.

It would be quite a skipped opportunity if they don't bring it to India IMHO, given the brand value that the Duster still has in India.

With success of 7 seater Tribe, Duster 7 seater could be a good offering, as a competition to Ertiga. Will be a lost opportunity if they dont bring it here. Even if they bring it, hopefully it wont be a stripped down version!

Renault has not yet decided on bringing the New Duster to India:

Even as SUVs are driving the Indian PV market, Renault is yet to take a call on “renewing” its flagship model, the Duster.
Depending on the success and depending on our capacity to address our risk from the market we will study the renewal of Duster.

What are Renault India waiting for? The Duster is a very capable vehicle but the current model is just too long in the tooth. It is almost two generations older than the competition. Just "renew" it already.

After well placed Triber and Kiger, renault certainly has the option to release the cat among pigeons with the 7 seater duster if and when they decide to launch it in India.

Logically, that seems to the product progression for Renault with New 5 seater Duster followed by 6 seater Grand Duster with updated Interiors (its Achilles Heal)
