Mazda tops Consumer Reports list for first time ever; BMW close second

Mazda topped the list followed by BMW, Subaru, Porsche and Honda. Alfa Romeo fell to last place among 32 brands.

Nice to see BMW amongst Top, higher than Toyota, Honda & Porsche.

Mazda does indeed have a beautiful lineup. But I guess most of their vehicles are too large for our market and might not make it to our shores. The loss is ours since most them also have a neat and balanced design language.

Re: Mazda tops Consumer Reports list for first time ever

JD Power has published their 2021 vehicle dependability study as well based on the 2018 model year vehicles. The usual and expected result for the most part.

The usual suspects in the bottom of the list.

^^^ Just to add on the Digital Audio Video System (I think they call is DVAS) are the problematic areas of the vehicles these. Toyota's reluctance to adopt to high end systems (including Android Auto & Apple Carplay) has helped IMO. Otherwise there is hardly any difference in few of the top manufacturers quality.

What helped Mazda jump three places in the survey was its increase in its predicated reliability score. Owner satisfaction ticked upward slightly, though it trails the other top four brands with its road-test score. Surprisingly, Mazda earned its top spot while offering the publication's least satisfy model – the Mazda CX-3. However, Consumer Reports recommends all seven of the Mazda models it tested this year.
Quote:
Alfa took the last place position from its corporate sibling Fiat, which wasn't tested this year because Consumer Reports needs two models to test. Maserati and Ram also were excluded this year.
What the Rankings mean:

Quote:
The Overall Score for individual models is based on four key factors: the road test, reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety.

For the Road-Test Score, we put the vehicles we buy through more than 50 tests and evaluations.

Predicted Reliability ratings are based on the problems reported by members in 17 trouble areas in CR’s auto surveys.

Owner Satisfaction predictions are based on whether CR members say in our surveys that they’d buy the same vehicle again, if given the chance.

Safety includes an assessment of crash-test results and extra points awarded for vehicles that come with proven safety features standard on all trims.

Green Choices reflect how many tested vehicles from a brand earned the Green Choice designation for being among the cleanest, lowest-emitting passenger vehicles.

Proud to be a Mazda owner since 2019.

One of the most underrated brands in the world.

Consumer Reports is the only such survey / report that I trust, because of their brutally unbiased nature. Like Team-BHP, they don't take car ads either.

Don't follow Mazda much, but happy to see BMW on the 2nd spot. BMW's reliability levels are awesome for a luxury brand and they are far, far ahead of Mercedes, Audi & Jaguar in that respect. The survey suggests the brand compares favourably even with the mass market names, which is saying a heck of a lot.

Don't Mazda has some sort of Toyota partnership with them? I wouldn't be surprised if they did well on the reliability front if big daddy Toyota is tinkering behind the scenes.

Good to see Mazda up there – one Japanese that try and follow its own path compared to the volume players like Toyota or Honda. I would say they are the BMW’s twin-brand from the far-east when it comes to driver-focused machines. BMW’s second spot is also quite an achievement, especially when compared to the German rivals like Audi and Mercedes. And a solid third spot for Subaru; the pleasing aspect here is, top 3 spots are occupied by manufacturers who still believe in the fun of driving.

Re: Mazda tops Consumer Reports list for first time ever; BMW close second

Not one bit surprised about Mazda and Subaru being in the top 5 .

Let me give you two examples.

Mazda:

Got our first Mazda sometime back and the sales experience was the same as luxury car brands. Our sales advisor requested us to take the survey e-mail from Mazda seriously. It's sent directly by Mazda and anything less than 10/10 was deemed as not good by the Japanese we were told. He said you may think 9/10 but that's not so.

I got a Subaru from the same dealership group some years back and it was pretty obvious to me that Mazda has raised the bar by several notches and is pushing the dealers to the highest standards.

Subaru:
Me: The leather on the steering wheel is peeling off. How long would it take to replace it?
Technician: Is the car under warranty?
Me: Yeah, it's got 3 more months to go. (Out of the 5 years of standard warranty.)
Technician: We'll submit a request to Subaru to approve the replacement under warranty.

The job was done in under ten-days.

Tell me. How many brands would do this on a wear-and-tear item without you even asking for it?

However, I don't understand how and why Mitsubishi scored so badly. I tried to get more information from CR but they need a paid membership to view anything more the headline content.

Does any one have more information other than the headline news? Even the "Predicted reliability" score doesn't tell me anything more than it's trend.

They have the product line-up across all sizes but the current Mazda is way too premium for India. They can't compete in the Indian market without making heavy compromises. The market size won't be worth their effort. IMHO the Americans, Europeans and Japanese have left the Indian market in the hands of the Indian, Korean and Chinese automakers to fight it out.

Case in point is KIA. It's shocking for me to see how the Hyundai-KIA group have stooped to make their cars price competitive for India at the cost of quality and safety.

Not Mazda. It is Subaru (FUJI Heavy Industries) that has a shareholding agreement with Toyota but even then their partnership is for specific cars like the GT86/BRZ and not like Hyundai-KIA.

The latest Mazda BT-50 UTE is based on the ISUZU D-Max though.

Very true. It's quite an achievement to go independent. One of the best things that happened to Mazda was getting away from Ford.

But like I said above, they do partnerships at a model level for the Miata/MX-5/FIAT 124 and the BT-50/D-Max

Mazda has a partnership with Toyota.
Quote:
In May 2015, the company signed an agreement with Toyota to form a "long-term partnership", that would, among others, see Mazda supply Toyota with fuel-efficient SkyActiv gasoline and diesel engine technology in exchange for hydrogen fuel cell systems.
Both of them also co own a factory in the US that is expected to open soon this year.

Happy to read this. Fell in love with Mazda cars when I drove the new Mazda3 for the first time around a year ago.

Just took that love to the next step today by booking a CX-8 2.5T AWD!

You are right. I stand corrected. Apologies.

What I wanted to demystify was the notion that Toyota as the big-brother was helping Mazda to make reliable cars. Reliability doesn't start and end with Toyota as some think. Japanese auto makers in general have very robust processes to make reliable cars.

Re: Mazda tops Consumer Reports list for first time ever; BMW close second

I've driven my freinds Mazda 3 hatchback with a stick shift - It is a wonderful car. The damn car feels so premium compared to the "economy" feeling Corolla & Civic.

Mazda has ended their JV with Ford, with whom they shared a few platforms & parts. The marriage with Ford (who don't specialize in smaller cars) was overall a mixed bag for Mazda.

You're right. Mazda & Toyota are sharing a manufacturing plant in Alabama, USA. Also, the Yaris sold in the US is a rebadged Mazda 2.

Mazdas are truly driver’s cars. Have driven the Mazda 3 and their minivan/MPV. Both were loads of fun.
Their “Zoom zoom” ad in the US was quite memorable.
