Following the announcement of axing the Passat from the US market, now reports indicate that Europe too will axe the Passat Sedan in 2023.

The silver lining ( for Eu) is the Passat wagon will survive. Volkswagen Areton too will follow the same path as the Passat Sedan.

The switch will happen in 2023 when production of the Passat’s sister model, the Skoda Superb, will be relocated from the Czech plant in Kvasiny

The thinking is VAG wants to reduce the risk of cannibalization as the Skoda Superb is known to eat into the Passat sedan’s sales due to its greater practicality thanks to a larger footprint and a hatchback layout

the next-generation Superb will target customers from countries in central and eastern Europe where sedans are still popular while the long-roof Passat will lure in buyers from western Europe. It goes without saying the Passat’s biggest enemy is not its Czech counterpart, but the proliferation of SUVs.

the company will shift even more focus to SUVs and its ever-growing EV lineup. Another victim will be the Passat’s sleeker derivative – the Arteon. Both the standard liftback and the Shooting Brake (it’s actually a wagon) won’t live to see another generation.

I'd do the same if I were VW management. Kill the Passat and focus on Electric wagons & SUVs. Passat is too big a car for most Europeans and Americans seem to care about trucks, SUVs, and EVs. (In the order of priority)

Goodbye Passat, you will not be missed. It'd be a big deal for many if the Jetta was killed.

While the Passat Sedan is not very popular in EU, it’s ‚kombi‘ (estate) version is a popular family car, here in Germany. Rides well on the Autobahn, is priced sensibly, has well appointed interiors with lots of space and exterior styling that has evolved beautifully over time.

In recent years, there has been a lot of speculation about whether some Volkswagen icons will end up in the abyss of history.
Passat was also spoken of, especially after the carmaker confirmed that it was preparing a production version of the ID Vizzion electrical concept, which should also arrive as a station wagon in 2023

But now it has been answered.

The new Passat B9 has been approved by the group's management and will continue to have internal combustion engines as well as the Golf and Tiguan . Should see the premieres in 2023, and according to sources from the carmaker, it will be the German twin of the Czech Škoda Superb.

It's not just that both cars will share a platform and powertrains, this has been the case so far, both are to build on the ideological foundations of the Superb and be manufactured side by side in a factory in Bratislava.

The Passat will no longer be a traditional sedan, it will only arrive as a station wagon in a more attractive, sportier style.

It is building just 1,973 of them, which is a reference to the year of the vehicle's original launch in Germany.

The brand is building 411 examples in Aurora Red Metallic with a Titan Black interior. This number is the Passat's original vehicle production code.

There are 423 in Racing Green Metallic models with a Mauro Brown cabin. VW builds the American Passat in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and this figure is the area code there.

The company is making 524 in a Pure White body and Mauro Brown on this inside. This refers to the Chattanooga factory opening on May 24, 2011.

Finally, there are 615 examples in Platinum Grey Metallic with a Titan Black interior. The number represents six generations of imported Passats in America, one made in the US, and five decades of US sales.

In addition to these color combos, all Passat Limited Editions get 18-inch wheels with a 15-spoke design, black mirror caps, power-folding side mirrors, and LED headlights. Inside, a "1 of 1973” emblem appears on one side of the seat tags, and "Chattanooga 2011" is on the other side. Special mats are at the bottom of the cupholders that shows an aerial map of Chattanooga and a drawing of the factory from above.

All Limited Editions get the comfort sport seats with perforated Vienna leather, driver seat memory, and a power-adjustable passenger seat. Both rows of seating are heated. Navigation, a Fender stereo, and front and rear parking assist are also standard.

The 2022 Passat Limited Edition will start at $30,295 (plus a $995 destination fee). The 411 units in Aurora Red Metallic will be an additional $395 for a price of $30,690.

As a sedan and SUV lover, this news is sad. It means we'll have more of what I dislike - pretend SUVs.

Superb rules that segment in India. If they're doing this to stop cannibalization, I am guessing Superb will continue to sell in India while Passat is kept out.

What about China? They love VW sedans there.

Volkswagen Passat axed in Europe!

Volkswagen Passat saloon axed but popular estate continues.

Seven-year-old saloon pulled from sale but five-door sibling lives on, alongside two variants of Arteon.

The B8-generation Passat has been on sale since 2014 and isn't due to be entirely replaced until 2023, when the ninth iteration is slated to arrive atop an updated version of the MQB architecture and with a greater emphasis on practicality.

The company hasn't set a date for the estate's withdrawal, but news of the saloon's retirement comes as development ramps up on the new 'Aero-B', which will essentially serve as an all-electric equivalent to the Passat.

Volkswagen Passat axed in Russia: AutoReview
