Re: The ugly grilles of the new BMW M3 and M4

That green shade of the M3 looks awesome.

The grille is outrageous in the first look. But this is what I have noticed with BMW – they do something outlandish like this, a bit of negative publicity flows in; once you start seeing these new toothy machines on road, the previous elegant models will start looking very outdated. And then the new grin/grille will become the new normal.

I am with you on this! I think the new grill lends a fresh aggression to the face of the M, I quite like it. I only wish the rear complemented the controversial front, looks too Korean/Japanese IMO.

However, what is not palatable at all is that front grill on the non M models.

Re: The ugly grilles of the new BMW M3 and M4

There grilles are growing on me faster than I thought! I hated them at first but now I don't find it repulsive just like the new Creta!

The blue one above with the diamond studded grill looks really classy.

Re: The ugly grilles of the new BMW M3 and M4

I think it looks good when you compare it to the other new BMW grilles. This one at least looks classic and harks back to the old BMWs. I bet that these would grow on everyone. I remember when Audi did the big chin grille, and everyone lost their mind. Few years later, that became very much the norm.

Re: The ugly grilles of the new BMW M3 and M4

Frankly, I think we are going overboard in criticising the new (actually not so new now) larger grills on BMWs. In a world which has cars like the Hyundai Creta, and the snarling grills on some of the Lexuses, I don’t think this should be a big deal for anyone. And I do agree with those who say that these large, aggressive grills actually work for performance models such as the M cars. And I guess even non M BMWs are supposed to be Ultimate Driving Machines - so these grills probably work on them too.

Re: The ugly grilles of the new BMW M3 and M4

While it does look absolutely atrocious in photos, maybe we should reserve judgement till we see them in the flesh. Infact, I was watching Matt Watson's video on the M3 and M4 and he seems to think that the grills look much better in the flesh (and I think the same too as per the video, since the number plate breaks up the mass of the grill).

We got used to the large grills on the X7, the facelifted 7 series and even the new Creta, perhaps we will get used to this as well.

It appears as if two commode latrines have been impaled to the front of the car.

This is surely a worthy contender for the ugliest vehicle in current production.

Quite a different taste you've got.
While everyone kept bashing Bangle's designs, you're a fan.

Thw e60 imo looks fine, and there's a certain attachment I have to that car since it's the first BMW I could identify properly and all. I didn't know what BMW was which. I could only tell indicas and swifts so.

Bangle's designs aren't as ugly as some people put it to be. it was definitely a huge leap forward from the usual designs. But this one, I have to admit, look unapologetically ugly . The rear ends are so goddamn glamorous albeit is a sad contrast to the faces of the car.

Drop dead gorgeous is the ass of the m4. But the face, I cannot digest

Re: The ugly grilles of the new BMW M3 and M4

There was an article on Ford's Edsel brand. They designed the vertical grill as their designers convinced the top management that vertical grilles maketh a premium luxury auto brand.

But in case of BMW this wasn't any issues as they already are a premium brand as compared to Edsel that was being launched & had to be differentiated from Mercury brand (those days).

I hope better sense prevails at Bavarian HQ & they redesign cohesive grilles.

Re: The ugly grilles of the new BMW M3 and M4

I actually don't mind BMW constantly upsizing their grills in every new model they released as I personally found them attractive. However, the other day when I saw the pictures for the new M3 and M4, I was disgusted by the front face of these models. While none of the other models affected me that much with their larger grills, the M3 and M4 certainly left a displeasing image in my head. It may have been the initial response because right now, 2-3 days after the release of the images, I would be lying if I said the grill did not grow on me. I'm sure as each day will pass by, more and more people will start to like the new grill.

The new Creta on the other hand still looks ghastly to me

Re: The ugly grilles of the new BMW M3 and M4

The kindey grill is becomming a villan in the otherwise timeless designs of BMW

It resonates so much with the Dark Night Dialogue:
"You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain."

The rear is lovely though!

Re: The ugly grilles of the new BMW M3 and M4

Why just why? Why couldn't they use the 3 series' face as it is. Why so desperate to differentiate? . The regular 3 series grill with subtle modifications would have worked fine.

Re: The ugly grilles of the new BMW M3 and M4

The only saving grace is that the number plate placement provides a much needed "break" to the grill.

Re: The ugly grilles of the new BMW M3 and M4

Looks like the design ethos now is to do anything to be different and be recognized. With the Koreans doing aggressive cuts and creases AND selling well, the Europeans are trying to do something similar (in principle).

The BMW grill meme that has been going around the internet is coming true now <lol>
The ugly grilles of the new BMW M3 and M4-bmw-kidney-grille-meme.jpg

For the record, I don't like the Fluidic design of Hyundai nor the Ignis design of Maruti. I prefer the clean, timeliness designs of VW/Skoda and the older designs of Hyundai/Toyota/Honda.
