The new Mercedes SL is set to be revived as a lighter, faster and more engaging model partly inspired by the brand’s motorsport roots, which is why overall development duties have been assigned to the AMG performance division. It will be the first time AMG has overseen development of any SL across its previous seven generations.

The new SL will be based on Mercedes’ MSA platform which also underpins the next-gen AMG GT. Aside from the platform, the SL is also expected to use the same axle assemblies, suspension, steering systems, 48V electric architecture and hybrid drivetrains, among various other components from the GT.

Test mules have shown a long, sloping bonnet, prominent rear haunches and an angular front grille design and the rear is similar to that of the AMG GT.

Mercedes plans to offer the SL with a limited range of hybridised in-line six-cylinder and V8 petrol engines in a line-up that’s likely to include both standard and AMG models.

The SL range will start with a SL 450 EQ Boost model powered by a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder turbo-petrol developing around 370hp, along with an added 22hp from the hybrid motor. Then, there will be the SL 53, which will have a more powerful AMG-tuned version of same drivetrain putting out around 436hp and added 22hp through electric assistance. Among the V8-powered models will be the SL 500 EQ Boost and a range topping AMG SL 63. Both models will use Mercedes’ 4.0-litre V8 turbo-petrol engines paired with the company’s EQ Boost hybrid system. The SL500 EQ Boost is expected to have a similar power output to the SL 53, but significantly more torque owing to electric assistance from the EQ System.

The SL 63 is likely to be offered in two states of tune, with the most powerful model developing in excess of 608hp and more than 30hp of electric boost. It is unclear if Mercedes will continue with the V12-powered SL.

Mercedes is expected to bring in the SL as a competitor to the Porsche 911s & Jaguar F-Type in the Indian Market in 2021/22.

Merceedes-Benz has released official images of the upcoming SL roadster undergoing winter testing, ahead of its official reveal later this year.

Mercedes also confirmed the 2+2-seater SL will only be sold under the AMG brand, and will be offered with fully variable 4Matic+ all-wheel drive.

AMG CEO reveals next-generation SL will replace GT Roadster.

The next generation of the Mercedes-Benz SL has already been spotted testing while camouflaged on a number of occasions but the German brand has been rather silent regarding its developments. Recently appointed AMG CEO Philipp Schiemer has now revealed some details of the heritage moniker and where it will fit in the brand’s future line-up.

While speaking to Car and Driver, Schiemer confirmed that the next SL will be exclusive to the AMG brand like the current GT coupe and GT four-door coupe. The aim is for it to provide a more balanced sportscar experience next to the GT. While Schiemer acknowledges that the SL’s roots are in racing, it will be more of a luxury weekend cruiser.

As the roadster-only SL enters the AMG stable, the current offering of GT Roadsters will be phased out.

Mercedes-AMG has revealed new details of the composite aluminium body shell used by the all-new SL roadster, due later this year

The engineers started from scratch as not a single part is taken from the old SL or the GT Roadster



Compared to the model it replaces, the new SL's bodyshell structure has a torsional stiffness increased by 18 percent. The transverse rigidity is up by 50 percent compared to the AMG GT Roadster, with the longitudinal rigidity now being 40 percent higher.



Mercedes-AMG goes on to say one of the main priorities during the development phase was to lower the center of gravity as much as possible. The new SL also has to comply with the company's own crash requirements, which Mercedes mentions they’re stricter in some areas than the legal requirements.



The lightweight bodyshell weighs only about 595 pounds (270 kilograms) excluding the doors, hood, trunk lid, and add-on assembly parts.

2022 Mercedes-AMG SL interior revealed.



The interior design takes its inspiration from the AMG GT and GT 4-Door Coupe.



The centre console is dominated by an 11.9 inch touchscreen, the entire screen can be tilted electronically to give drivers the best possible view.



There is also an optional head-up display that can show the car’s surroundings in 3D.



The AMG SL adopts a 2+2 seating layout for the first time since the Mercedes SL R129 model from 1989.

This is certainly a bold move by Mercedes considering the GT segment and Coupes are on the fall and the SL as of late has also been declining in sales due to the presence of the GT and the S-Class Coupe. I hope this new SL certainly captures the magic similar to the R129 because this might as well be the last ICE SL we'll ever get. Also despite not being a massive fan of mercedes using a TV sized screen in the middle, the interior is slightly reminiscent of the W123 and R230.

2022 Mercedes-AMG SL launched

Dimensionally its 4705mm in length, 1915mm width and 1359mm height with a wheelbase of 2700mm



The new SL get its own unique detailing
- including a heavily structured front bumper,
- AMG’s signature Panamericana grille with louvres that open and close depending on cooling requirements.



For the first time the new model features a triple-layer fabric roof. Claimed to weigh 21kg less than the metal roof, taking a claimed 15 seconds to fold completely.



The new SL will be available in SL 55 and SL 63 trims, with both featuring a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine. The SL55 model offers 469 hp and 700 Nm.



The SL 63 puts out 577 hp and 800 Nm, paired with a standard nine-speed torque-converter AMG Speedshift MCT automatic gearbox



For the first time, the SL is available with fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ four-wheel drive system.



There are five standard driving modes – Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual.
- An additional Race mode for the SL63 and the SL55 fitted with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package.

The SL55 with a claimed 0-62mph time of 3.9sec and a 183mph top speed.

The SL 63 with a claimed 0-62mph time of 3.6sec and a 196mph top speed.



The new SL roadster brings back the fabric roof and 2+2 seats layout.



Inside, the SL follows Mercedes’ recent arrivals - the EQS and S-Class by featuring
- 11.9in vertically oriented touchscreen, which can be adjusted to sit at angles between 12deg and 32deg.

- The touchscreen is paired with a 12.3in LCD driver display and an optional head-up display.



- It runs the latest generation of Mercedes' MBUX operating system and offers a range of display choices - including bespoke AMG and soft-top display modes.



The new SL runs on alloys ranging from 19in to 21in. Boot capacity is 240 litres when the roof is up and 213 litres when it is lowered.



The R232-generation SL has been developed by the AMG performance car division with an all-new aluminium platform, consisting of a spaceframe and self-supporting body structure.

Prices for the new SL have yet to be confirmed.

Wow!. That's a lot of difference between the AMG GTR convertible and the new SL AMG. It's like asking "spot the 6 differences between the two".
So minimalistic are the differences that it's hard to differentiate between the two (Grey one is the AMG GTR) most of the time - especially on roads.
