The best-selling cars in the world, 2019

Global Passenger Vehicle Sales 2019

- China emerges clearly as the Worlds biggest passenger vehicle market and sold over 2.1 crore units in 2019! However; it registered a degrowth of -9.5% in 2019 v/s 2018.

-Passenger vehicle sales in US & Japan was almost stagnant. The scenario has been similar in the past few years.

- India stutters at the backdrop of of poor policy management ,issues like BS6 transition, varying taxation and the economic slowdown and recorded a double digit decline in 2019 when compared to 2018.

-Chinese market was over 7 times bigger than Indian market.

-Brazil recorded the highest YoY growth and is inching towards India’s numbers. ( VW's is highly focused here)

Best Selling cars - Global:

- Top 10 selling cars in the world in the aforementioned list. Highlighted if the marque is selling in Indian market and its contribution to the group.

-Toyota Corolla retained the tag of World’s Best Selling Car and sold over 12.3 Lakh units in 2019. ironically Corolla is discontinued in India now due to low volumes.

-In India; Corolla could sell only 1,422 units and contributed to mere 0.12% of global sales.

-Honda had launched the latest iterations of its global bestsellers in the Indian market in mid 2018 (CR-V) and early 2019 (Civic). However; both the models couldn’t do much to enhance Honda’s numbers in the India market and the global contribution was meager too (Civic – 0.60% & CR-V – 0.13%).

- The numbers are a clear indication that Indian market is very unique. What works across different parts of the world; may not work in the subcontinent. This is now clear to OEM's for which they will tweak the portfolio and launch required models here.

Not really all that unique, I think - if Corolla were priced a bit like the Honda City and we had (very) easy financing at 3-5% APR, I am sure we would have lot more Corollas (or the likes) on our roads as well!

Fundamental driving force is economics - micro and macro! Reduce the salaries in for example the US, increase the cost of gasoline to even numbers we have in India, make financing a little challenging at 9-12% APR and soon enough you will have folks clamoring for something like one of our best sellers...A Suzuki Alto!

If Indian market is unique, it is only in that - lower salaries; higher APRs; no easy financing; etc. etc....all things economic and infra!

Re: The best-selling cars in the world, 2019

World's top selling cars in 2021:

The Toyota RAV4, aka Wildlander in China, made history by becoming the first ever SUV to lead the global ranking. The brand sold more than 1.13 million units, up by 6%. It clearly outperformed its closest rival, the Honda CR-V, up by 3% to 903,000 units.

Their rival from Nissan, the X-Trail or Rogue, only increased its volume by 0.5% due to the model generation change over. Still, it was able to outsold the Mazda CX-5, Haval H6, Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace and Ford Escape/Kuga.

Thanks to Maruti Suzuki, the largest sold MPV is Suzuki Ertiga and Suzuki swift becomes the 3rd best selling small car.
