The 90th edition of the Geneva Motor Show, scheduled to be held between March 5, 2020 and March 15, 2020, has been cancelled.

Due to the outbreak of Coronavirus in the country, the Government of Switzerland has implemented a ban on large scale events with more than 1,000 people. The ban comes into effect immediately and will apply till at least March 15, 2020. According to the organisers, due to the size of the show, it cannot be postponed.

The Geneva Motor Show is one of the biggest car expos in the world and is held in the month of March every year. Many manufacturers launch new cars at the show. Concept cars are unveiled at the event as well.

Japan is considering cancelling 2020 Tokyo Olympics. That would be massive news if confirmed.

World's largest exhibition for the mobile industry Mobile World Congress at Barcelona, was also cancelled this month.

This is really getting scary, with so many major industry events cancelled, business around the world is going to suffer a lot.

Hosting an Olympics is proven to (possibly) drive badly governed countries into bankruptcy. Not hosting the Olympics might do the same to Japan. I wonder how much costs have been incurred by them so far.

See what has happened to the share prices of the company which makes the most popular video conferencing solution. It is the direct affect of Coronavirus, as more people prefer video conf over physical meeting and travelling.

Re: Coronavirus: 2020 Geneva Motor Show cancelled

The press statement -

Quote:
The 90th edition of the GIMS, which was supposed to welcome the media from next Monday and the general public from 5 to 15 March 2020, will now finally not take place. This is an injonction decision of the Federal Council of 28 February 2020 that no events with more than 1,000 people are allowed to take place until 15 March 2020. The decision falls 3 days before the opening of the exhibition to the media.

The organizers accept this decision: "We regret this situation, but the health of all participants is our and our exhibitors' top priority. This is a case of force majeure and a tremendous loss for the manufacturers who have invested massively in their presence in Geneva. However, we are convinced that they will understand this decision," said Maurice Turrettini, Chairman of the Foundation Board. We would like to warmly thank all those involved in the organisation of the 2020 edition of GIMS.

A few days before the opening of the event, the construction of the stands was very nearly complete. A week ago, during the press conferences announcing the 2020 edition, there was nothing to suggest that such a measure was necessary. The situation changed with the appearance of the first confirmed coronavirus diseases in Switzerland and the injonction of the Federal Council on 28.02.2020. The event is cancelled due to this decision.

In the meantime, the dismantling of the event will now have to be organised. The financial consequences for all those involved in the event are significant and will need to be assessed over the coming weeks. One thing is certain: tickets already purchased for the event will be refunded. The organisers will communicate about this as soon as possible, via their website.
From India, TATA Motors usually puts up a good show at Geneva. They would have lost a good amount of money. Also, are we missing some great unveils? Maybe the production version of the HBX?

EDIT: Looks like TATA Motors had decided to skip the Expo back in December itself. https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/india...otor-show.html (Rumour: Tata Motors to opt out of 2020 Geneva Motor Show)

Re: Coronavirus: 2020 Geneva Motor Show cancelled

All things considered, A good decision. Corona Virus outbreaks seem to be happening across the world and in some unlikely places. I shudder to think what happens if it reaches a critical mass of population, from which return is not possible. Govt.s across the world should be doing their utmost to help contain this menace..

Biggest casualty may be airline industry. Any travel ban, travel abstinence will hit them directly. The second casualty will be hotel industry. No one thought a virus will hit world economy this hard. Hope the virus dies down, like the many before it did.

A brave move . This is especially welcome after their earlier idiotic stance:
Quote:
Organisers of the Geneva Motor Show have urged executives taking part to stay 3ft away from anyone with a cough in a bid to prevent a coronavirus outbreak.

Wondering what happens to the big monies already paid by the OEMs / participants. Do they get a full refund?

Re: Coronavirus: 2020 Geneva Motor Show cancelled

This virus is getting close and affecting us in many ways.

Our company has postponed all international travel some weeks ago already.
Anybody that has been travelling, on business or privately, to any of the known hot spots is not allowed back into the office either. You need to work from home for the next fourteen days. A colleague of mine, just spent a fortnight in North Italy with his family. They returned back home over the weekend. Now he needs to work from home.

Yesterday evening, the hospital here in Gorinchem, the Netherlands closed down completely. Only about 5km from our home.

They found out they had had a patient, who was moved to another hospital a few days ago, had the virus. So they closed the whole hospital to all new patients, visitors etc. Can you imagine, being there and nobody can come and visit? They are making exceptions for the children. Their parents will still be allowed to visit, but it will be ultra tightly controlled.

I had an appointment for a check-up this morning and they contacted my last night already to reschedule.

I have not been doing any international travel. I was supposed to travel to India, Romania, Malaysia and Australia. As it is, we have put a hold on all air travel, unless it is absolutely business critical.

Re: Coronavirus: 2020 Geneva Motor Show cancelled

At the outset, this being my first post, I thank the moderators for inducting me into this great community.

Speaking of cancellations because of COVID-19, the International Geological Congress (IGC) that was supposed to be held at New Delhi from 2-8 March 2020 was first cancelled and then postponed to the second week of November 2020 only 10 days before it was supposed to begin. IGC is a major conference organised every 4 years where more than ten thousand Earth scientists participate from all over the world. So, you can imagine the chaos it caused as all the arrangements regarding flights, accommodation, Visa etc. had been made already by various national and international participants.

And since then, everyday news of cancellations of various events keep appearing!
