According to a media report, the Mercedes-Maybach SUV will be unveiled by the end of 2019.



The car is expected to be based on the GLS SUV. It could get some changes like a different grille, headlights, tail lights, extra chrome trim and a new alloy wheel design. It is also expected to get an extended wheelbase when compared to the GLS. On the inside, the SUV will get luxurious features similar to other Maybach models. The digital instrument cluster and the head-unit could get Maybach-themed graphics. The SUV is likely to be offered as a four-seater, while a fifth seat can be had as an option.

Powering the SUV could be a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission. A twin-turbo 6.0-litre V12 engine could also be offered.

The Maybach SUV could compete against the Range Rover SVAutobiography, Bentley Bentayga and the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Mercedes' exceptional "Maybach" strategy should make it to business case studies. They resurrected the brand over a decade ago, but those were for terribly gawdy & ostentatious cars like the Maybach 62. That didn't go down too well.

By using the moniker on their S-Class and now the GLS, Mercedes is effectively minting money. The S650 is a 3 crore rupee car! Whoever thought of this is a genius.

Looking forward to the GLS & its Maybach version. I like what I've seen so far of the new-gen GLS.

True indeed. In fact Mercedes may slowly bring out the Maybach'd avatars of its other cars if they see potential in this strategy which I think there should be plenty of.

So we may see an E class/GLE class Maybach within the next few years. And it won't take much time for this to trickle down to other smaller Mercedes cars.

While the "Maybach" branding will bring is huge $$$ to Mercedes - I, for one, think that they are diluting the Maybach brand / image. Imagine Rolls Royce using their name on a super luxury 3 Series or a 5 Series?

I don't think they are diluting the brand per se. The decision to stop producing bespoke Maybach cars and instead use a Maybach moniker on regular Mercedes cars was deliberately taken so as to provide Mercedes customers with even more luxurious versions of regular Mercedes cars. We all know how the Maybach 57/62 twins royally flopped in the market. What AMG is to performance Maybach is to luxury. Now AMG also makes their own models like the GT but by using AMG badge on regular Mercedes cars doesn't dilute their brand. Same is the case with Maybach now.

There is very little room for a new brand but plenty of room for sub-brands. Audi mulled bring back the Horsch name but backed off. Ditto Aston Martin with Lagonda.

At the more affordable end of the spectrum, Ford is doing something similar with its "Vignale" versions of regular models like Ford Focus. Although, I don't know how successful it has been for them.

Its obvious from the way it looks at Mercedes is trying to target two categories of customers:

- Arab Sheikhs with lots of $$$
- Chinese business magnates looking for a bling mobile.

Leave maybach aside, that does not even look European. Looks like a "Feng-lung" designed after receiving a description over a patchy telephone connection.

Essentially, it reminds me of the cars the Chinese rip off, but add to it all the bling available on aliexpress.

The SUV trend has resulted in some rather ugly vehicles from certain car makers, some more uglier than others.

Cayenne, Bentayga, Cullinan, DBX and now this , the badges that represented tastefully designed vehicles are now found on vehicles that do not deserve it one bit! WO Bentley must be turning in his grave!

The older vehicles that came before this SUV culture were much more elegant like the Mk1 Range Rover, International Scout, Ford Bronco, Jeep Wagoneer etc.

Well this is because SUVs like the Range Rover and the Jeeps do not have any sedans or other non SUV body type cars in their family from which they need to take design inspiration. But in the case of the Bentayga,Cayenne,Cullinan etc this is not the case. These cars have to maintain the family look and thus they look like steroid injected versions of their sedan/sports car cousins like the Flying Spur,911,Phantom.

The designers must be having a hard time to make these SUVs look butch but at the same time make them conform to the family look.

And as far as turning in the grave is concerned, well I would say that Mr Bentley or the others would at least be happy at the fact that their empire is minting way more money than it would have ever did without these SUVs. And in turn these fat profits are used to further strengthen their mainstream portfolio like the sedans and sports cars.
