Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its two newest models, the Mercedes-AMG A 45 and its four-door coupe twin, the CLA 45. Like other AMGs, these come with the 4Matic AWD system and more powerful S versions.






















The base model comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 382 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque.The higher-powered S model will offer 416 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Those specs make this the most powerful production four-cylinder yet. All this power allows the base CLA 45 to hit 60 mph (~100 kmh) in an estimated 4 seconds on the way to a standard 155 mph top speed. The optional Driver's Package allows the car to hit 168 mph.







Unlike a regular front-mounted engine, the new AMG motor has been rotated around its vertical axis by 180 degrees. This means that the turbocharger and the exhaust manifold are now positioned at the rear and the intake system is in the front. This improves aerodynamics and allows for better cooling.

The AMG gets an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It also has a unique all-wheel-drive system that uses two clutches for each rear axle. This allows for carefully controlled left and right torque vectoring on the rear wheels.

All this variability allows Mercedes to have a Drift mode available. Demonstrated in the video below -

Damn, that is just smoking hot! Mercedes, really .

In some ways, I'd prefer these over the larger AMGs, especially for India. Reason 1 = smaller & more chuckable. Lots more fun on a Bombay-Nashik road or Lavasa ghat than a mighty E63. Two, just the right amount of power, yet fast enough.

Now they are almost supercar fast - not just fast hatchbacks. 0-62mph in 3.9 sec is in crazy fast territory.

The CLA45 actually looks really nice this gen. The rear especially is super nice.
