Where the auto industry spends its social media ad dollars

Quite an interesting one from Forbes.

Where the auto industry spends its social media ad dollars-ad.jpg

Quote:
Tesla spends $0 on advertising, according to a new report from BrandTotal. But competitors such as Toyota, BMW, Porsche, and Ford spend heavily on the major social platforms: Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter.

Toyota, for instance, spends 62 percent of its social budget on Facebook. Porsche, on the other hand, allocates only 14 percent of its budget to Facebook, preferring instead to use 47 percent of its major social platform spend on YouTube.

The results indicate that Facebook gets the lion's share of automotive ads. YouTube, however is no slouch, taking a third to almost half the budget for brands like Honda, Ford, Cadillac, Porsche, and more than half for Audi, at 54 percent.

Twitter, on the other hand, does not fair so well.

Why is Facebook so popular? - Maybe because its users are old.

Interesting article. My assumption was that now a days,Twitter would have been the first choice for paid campaigns. Did not expect Facebook and even YouTube to be so popular. I am one of those guys who find all these video ad's very intrusive.

Looking at the Tesla's approach, it recollects some old quote of Soichiro Honda on the lines "A good product doesn't need marketing, make superior quality, people will buy"

Tesla need not spend a dime, because Elon does it for free on Twitter

He is adding 23k+ followers DAILY on average. The personality cult around him is HUGE and I'd bet if someone did an analysis of his followers - they'd find a lot of cross interests (SpaceX geeks who ultimately go on to buy a Tesla).

He is in effect doing targeted advertising on his own!

Exactly what I wanted to post .

Unlike other manufacturers who pileup an inventory and then resort to heavy advertising and discounts, Teslas have a healthy order book. They fight a backlog without a dime spent on advertising or marketing.

Re: Where the auto industry spends its social media ad dollars

In India, automobile industry spends more on advertising in 2019 across TV, print and radio.

Quote:
Across print, television and radio, Maruti Suzuki was reported as the top advertiser for the first three months of 2019
Quote:
Mahindra and Mahindra, the second company on the list of top advertisers, spent more on television, digital and print.

- Traditional mediums like television, print and radio saw growth in ad volumes of cars by 17 percent, 15 percent and 7 percent respectively between January and March 2019 as against the same period last year.

- This year, among the three mediums, television tops the chart with 58 percent in terms of ad insertions followed by radio at 37 percent and print at 5 percent.

-In terms of television programming, news bulletins turned out to be the most preferred genre in 2019 as it captured 32 percent share followed by feature films with 22 percent share.

Region-wise:

Quote:
North zone topped the charts in terms of regions for the print category with a contribution of 34 percent of ad spend. New Delhi was the highest not only in North Zone but in overall India.
Quote:
Region-wise for radio, Maharashtra recorded the highest spend. The state was on top with 19 percent share of category advertising, followed by Gujarat with 18 percent share.
Quote:
Nearly 75 percent of print’s growth of Rs 820 crore in 2018 was accounted for by top five categories including auto.
The trend may not continue this year due to dip in sales volumes this year.

This is interesting. On one hand I know that Tesla doesn't have the cash to spend on advertising, but as a strategy what do others on the forum think? Tesla has been quite the disrupter in the US auto sector in terms of their selling as dealership models.

I'm pretty sure if the same money was invested in just having test drive cars of all variants atleast in one city, the sales would have been more. Across all brands, I have never managed to get a TD of the engine+transmission combo I wanted in the same day, always it was not available or gone for test drive. And in 8/10 cases never got to drive that car as well even later on.

Not just older, but also the fact that the range of age groups using the platform is huge! With ads making their way between posts there is effectively no way to bypass them altogether, and they are less intrusive too, to a large extent. Ads on Youtube however are more intrusive, and can get irriatating when beyond a limit.

Focussing on Instagram is like an investment for the future. Bombarding users with sponsored content sows the seed of exceitement, and at some point down the line the investment turns successful. It also spans across a different majority age group as opposed to other forms of social media.

Re: Where the auto industry spends its social media ad dollars

I'm sure those numbers will change a couple of years down the line, if they want to target the people in my generation. Facebook is still a huge craze among people in rural areas because they recently got access to it (mostly after the advent of Jio). Same with people as old as my parents, who've been using smartphones and Facebook for a few years only. But people my age started using Facebook in junior school/at the beginning of middle school, and by the end of high school everyone got bored of it. Some of my friends might have Facebook accounts, but I'm sure they never use it.

The Cambridge Analytica scandal was one of the final nails in Facebook's coffin. Read this. IMHO, these auto companies must move to other social media sites in order to reach more people.

Instagram is the place where I currently come across ads. Most people in my generation use Instagram the most, but that's mostly because it's newer than Facebook, Twitter. I can see the use of Instagram declining in the next few years as well.
