UK roads safest amongst the EU countries

Based on a new study from the European Commission, the United Kingdom (UK) had the lowest number of road fatalities at 28 deaths per million inhabitants in 2018. Overall, the European Union (EU) saw a decrease of 1% in total road fatalities compared to the 2017.

After UK, Denmark and Ireland had the lowest figures, while the countries of Romania, Bulgaria and Latvia had the highest road accident fatalities. In the period 2017-2018, Slovenia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Cyprus saw drops of 13%, 11%, 9% and 8% respectively. For the period 2010-2018, Greece saw the biggest drop in the number of road accident fatalities at 45%, followed by Lithuania (43%), Portugal (35%) and Slovenia (34%). The same figure for the EU as a whole, was 21%.

In 2018, there were around 25,000 road fatalities on the EU roads. Earlier this week, the EU is looking to introduce a set of safety measures like speed limiting devices relative to the speed limit and road conditions. Last month, Volvo had announced that it would be limiting the top speed of its cars to 180 km/h.
