Rumour: Mitsubishi to consider bringing back Lancer

In 2017, the Mitsubishi Lancer sedan was discontinued globally. According to a media report, the Japanese carmaker is now considering reviving the brand.

Mitsubishi COO has said that despite the popularity of SUVs and crossovers, which command a 35-37% share of the total car market, the company is evaluating the passenger car market. The new Lancer could cater to this segment. It could be based on the CMF-C platform from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance.

The Lancer name was first used in 1973 in Japan. It lasted over 9 generations before being discontinued. Over 6 million copies of the cars have been sold till date. One of the popular models was the Lancer Evo sports sedan. Production lasted from 2002 till 2016 and all featured turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engines and all-wheel drive as standard. The Evo X went on sale in 2007 and was discontinued in 2016. The Lancer was successful in WRC as well with Tommi Makinen winning the four drivers’ championship from 1996-1999.

Due to the popularity of the name in China and Taiwan, the Lancer is still sold under the Grand Lancer name using revised front & rear portions along with the interiors. It is made by the China Motor Corporation.

Really pretty much a dead brand globally and even more in India. In our local market, I guess they haven't sold a single car for the last few months?

Re: Rumour: Mitsubishi to consider bringing back Lancer

It is a good move, as Lancer is possibly their most precious brand along with Pajero.

As for Mitsubishi India, all they need is find a new partner. May be Mahindra?

Will I buy one? Well, I already have 2 Mitsubishis . The engineering excellence and reliability are very impressive. Hope they don't compromise on those.

This is incorrect! They are selling really well in many countries including the UAE.

They goofed up in India by associating themselves with HM or they would have done quite well for themselves.

Cheers!

Re: Rumour: Mitsubishi to consider bringing back Lancer

I read somewhere that it'll be based on a Renault (not surprising), and somewhere else that they'll use the Lancer nameplate for a crossover! Either way, they'd be crazy to launch a Lancer sedan as its brand value is finished in most markets, while sedans too are a shrinking segment. If you have limited resources, spend them well.

That's hardly saying anything! The UAE's car market is 2.5 - 3.0 lakh cars a year. India sells as many in a month!! Mitsubishi is a damaged brand with poor or weak presence in most big markets of the world. Take a look at their sales figures here & you'll realise how small Mitsubishi is at the global level.
