Mercedes-AMG dropping V12 engine, the V8 will live on. Quote:
Mercedes-AMG has started phasing out the V12 engine from its line-up.
The firm has already dropped the V12-powered variants of the G-Class and the SL from its portfolio. The only AMG-badged, V12-powered cars left are the sedan, coupe, and convertible versions of the S65. They'll retire without a successor.
"We are going to move the S65 out of our portfolio," confirmed AMG boss Tobias Moers in an interview with Australian website GoAuto.

They might still make them for customers. Aston Martin has a partnership with them for engine supplies and infotainment systems, in fact Daimler owns a minor stake in Aston Martin. The DB11 uses the Mercedes-AMG V8, I'm not quite sure about the V12 however.
This is the worst news I am reading today. The AMG V12 is the stuff of legends. It's the German answer to the Italian V12's. Sad to see its demise. But as JC says.. This is the sacrifice we have to make to see Polar Bears and Penguins.

Just to clarify, Mercedes will still be making V12s. Just that AMG won't be using them. The V12 needs to be there for cars like the S-Class / Maybach. Period.
That said, it's still the end of an era. What's an AMG line-up without a flagship V12 variant?

This is only the beginning. This is the road leading up to an electric future for most, if not all European manufacturers. I wouldn't be surprised if the 'big' Lamborghini - the Aventdor successor or the more likely the one after it does away with the V12 in favour of V8+electrification along with the Ferrari's.
This is a sad inevitability,
Mercedes-AMG S 65 Final Edition revealed
Mercedes-Benz has taken the covers off its last V12-powered S-class, the S 65 Final Edition. Limited to just 130 units worldwide, the Final Edition will be finished exclusively in Obsidian black metallic paint and get copper and carbon fibre accents.
Quote:
A '1 of 130' badge is placed on the centre console, confirming the car’s limited-edition status.
Powering the S 65 Final Edition is AMG’s mighty 6.0-litre bi-turbo V12 petrol engine. It produces 630hp and 1000Nm of peak torque.
In true AMG fashion, there’s the 'One Man – One Engine' plaque in the engine bay but, this time around, it is finished in gloss black instead of silver. |
