Jaguar announces production of E-Type Zero EV

Jaguar has announced production plans for the E-Type Zero - an all-electric car based on the 1960's sportscar. Existing owners of the 6-cylinder models of the E-Type can get the fully reversible conversion done in their cars as well.

According to Jaguar, the electric car will maintain the handling, design and looks as well as performance of the original car, while delivering no emissions. The electric powertrain along with the lithium-ion battery is comparable to the size of the original straight-six engine. The car also gets a digital instrument cluster, LED headlights and an optional touchscreen infotainment system.

The motor and batteries are derived from the Jaguar I-Pace. It gets a 220 kW (295 BHP) motor with a 40 kWh battery pack. The company is aiming for a range of 274 km on a single charge. The motor is connected to the wheels using a single speed reduction gear. The electric version is also reported to match the conventional car's 241 km/h top speed, while its claimed 0-100 km/h time is under 7 seconds.

It is reported that an E-Type restored by Jaguar and converted to a "Zero" would cost over US$ 375,000, while the conversion of an existing car in good shape is expected to cost US$ 75,000.

Undoubtedly, the best looking electric car out there. No modern design can match the sheer beauty of this one.

Re: Jaguar announces production of E-Type Zero EV

Sacrilige to modify one of the most iconic classic cars to electric. What’s with the digital displays?

It will be interesting to see what it does to the value of these cars. Depending on the exact variant and condition E-types can cost currently anywhere between 75 - 200.000 UKP easily. A lot of that depends on how original it is and well maintained.

Obviously when you rip the engine out, it is not in original condition anymore. The number of people willing to shell out serious money for an electric E-type is probably small at the moment. So all of sudden your original classic Jaguar will depreciate enormously, despite the substantial investments for the E-conversion.

Most Classic Jaguar clubs are likely to kick you out as a member as well with such monstrosity. You are not likely to be allowed at the Goodwood revival and similar events.

This is not a car for classic car enthusiast. It is for posers who want to jump on the electrical band wagon hype

Re: Jaguar announces production of E-Type Zero EV

^I agree with you except for one thing. I think the existing E-types will become more valuable. They'd be rarer. Original-er. From a company that supposedly no longer exists.
Other than that, this move almost feels uncouth by Jaguar. Ugh. No class.

Edit: also I thought the E-types had gone into the million mark, no?

I've never been one to bank too much on 'originality', and if I ever owned a classic car, the first thing I'd do is rip out the old engine and put a new motor under the hood. Just imagine the fun of a Fintail Mercedes with a 3.0L diesel / 5.0L V8 and a ZF 8-speed gearbox.

But yes, never ever would I put an electric motor in a classic car. This is a very poor move by Jaguar on its most iconic car.
