Audi boss Rupert Stadler arrested in VW Dieselgate investigation

Quote:
Audi chairman Rupert Stadler has been detained by German authorities on matters rating to the diesel emission manipulation, senior Audi sources confirm.

The 55-year-old German, who has headed Audi since 2010, was taken into custody by the German police on Monday morning following an investigation on charges of fraud and misrepresentation.

"The accused was brought before the investigating judge, who ordered the execution of the pre-trial detention," the Munich public prosecutor's office said in a statement.

As a reason for Stadler's arrest, the Munich public prosecutor's office cited "evidence suppression".

"We cannot comment on the substance of our background in the light of the ongoing investigations. For Mr. Stadler, the presumption of innocence continues to apply, " it added in a further statement.

Stadler is currently being questioned by members of the Munich public prosecutor's office, according to information obtained by Autocar.

Stader, who has continuously denied any wrongdoing in the dieselgate emission manipulation scandal, and another Audi board member, Bernd Martens, were named as a key suspects by the Munich public prosecutor's office on 30 May.

German media reports suggest evidence obtained in the recent questioning of other former Audi officials link Stadler with possible diesel emission manipulation from 2012 onwards.

Stadler’s detention for questioning comes one week after German police and members of the Munich public prosecutors offices raided his private residence in Germany.

Re: Audi boss Rupert Stadler arrested in VW Dieselgate investigation

Very good. I hope they arrest Winterkorn too if he indeed knew about the cheating (which I'm sure he did as the CEO).

Since the scandal broke out, VW has faced a lot of brand damage, billions of dollars & euros in fines, lots of money spent in buybacks and some major arrests. One of the objectives of any punishment should be that it's a deterrent enough to anyone committing the crime again. Things have been in the right direction that way. Few car companies or engineers will ever have the guts to cheat like this again.

Wholeheartedly agree. Jail them for the maximum tenure allowable under relevant jurisdictions. But give them 1 hour with a group comprising of middle-level managers, supply chain, distribution and dealers and their families first to understand what their actions or inactions led to.

As Martin Luther King Jr. put it succinctly: There comes a time when silence is betrayal

Glad to see justice is being done in at least the automotive sector if not in the finance sector for punishing wrongdoing CxOs.

While the company will lose billions of euros and incalculable amount of brand value, EU is shining bright for doing the right thing. Rather than China, I hope the world looks forward to be led by them with the US falling back.

Re: Audi boss Rupert Stadler arrested in VW Dieselgate investigation

Why he was arrested:

Quote:
Audi’s suspended Chief Executive Officer Rupert Stadler was arrested this week because prosecutors suspect he tried to put an employee on leave who was providing evidence in the diesel-cheating investigation, a person familiar with the situation said.

Stadler was named a suspect last week because he allegedly prevented Audi’s internal diesel task force from interviewing the engineers involved in writing the illegal software, the person said, declining to be named because the information isn’t public. Prosecutors raided his house and tapped his phone.

2 months up and no sign of a reprieve. His plea has been rejected.

Quote:
Audi's Rupert Stadler will remain in custody after a Munich court rejected an appeal by the executive to be released.

Stadler, 55, had initially cooperated with prosecutors but has since ceased to give statements, prosecutors said in July.

VW fires Audi boss Rupert Stadler

Quote:
Volkswagen Group announced on Tuesday the firing of Rupert Stadler. Stadler was suspended in June for his role in the VW Dieselgate scandal.

Stadler's firing doesn't come as a huge surprise as the executive has been jailed since June. Effective immediately, Stadler will be stripped of his title as CEO of Audi. VW is also removing Stadler from Volkswagen's board of management.
