Porsche's boss of powertrains arrested over emission scandal

According to a media report, Joerg Kerner, head of the powertrain department at Porsche has been arrested. It is reported that German Police have kept him in remand due to him being considered a flight risk.

It has been over two years since Volkswagen admitted to emissions cheating. Kerner is one of the three people at Porsche who is said to have known the fact that engines developed by Audi had been manipulated (these were used in Porsches). In the larger scheme of things, authorities have also brought in Audi's 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine under investigation. The same engine was used in over 80,000 VW, Audi and Porsche models that were found to have the illegal software.

Back in October 2017, Wolfgang Hatz - former Research & Development Head at Porsche, was arrested in Munich over his role in the emissions scandal. Porsche had placed him under suspension for a while, before Hatz resigned. In December last year, Volkswagen Executive Oliver Schmidt was jailed for 7 years and a fine of USD 4,00,000 was imposed on him by a US judge.

Well, you cheat, you pay the price. As simple as that. Heck, the man behind the 918 Spyder & 919 Hybrid is behind bars since 2017 - link. I'm personally happy to see such rogues in jail and hope the net eventually expands to nail everyone who was directly responsible for the scam.

A strong deterrent is needed so that it never happens again.

Glad to see some actual heads roll!

In India, they would have probably sacrificed an entry level manager who would have grudgingly followed management orders just for a petty promotion or incentives. That is - if at all any action is taken - which in itself is quite unlikely.

Case in point - GMs old Tavera scandal. Difference with which VW emission scandal was corrected in the US v/s India etc.

It isn't all sunshine. VW emission cheating was already known to EPA 2-years prior to them making it public. They needed a scapegoat since they had accidentally polluted 3 Million gallons of mine water into Colorado river contaminating the whole thing.

They decided to come out with the scandal at a appropriate time so people wouldn't talk about their mistake but rather VW's mistake.

There is hardly any punishment for corporate and financial fraud at big firms even in United States.

Reports coming in that Rupert Stadler, chief executive of Volkswagen's Audi division, has been detained by German authorities as part of their probe into manipulation of emission controls.
