Re: New Fiesta-based Compact SUV from Ford - Called the Puma

Ford PUMA reveled as a boring crossover - likely to be the EcoSport replacement for Europe.

Quote:
Slotting below the Kuga/Escape in the Blue Oval’s SUV line-up, the Puma looks like an SUV companion to the Fiesta hatchback, much like the Mazda CX-3 is the standalone crossover take on the Mazda 2.

Full specifications are still to be detailed, though the Puma looks to be on the smaller size of the compact SUV segment, closer in size to the likes of the Hyundai Kona, aforementioned Mazda CX-3 and Nissan Juke as opposed to larger rivals like the Nissan Qashqai.
Quote:
While the design is unique to the Puma, its powertrains are likely shared with the Fiesta. Ford has confirmed the Puma will be available with a 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder petrol engine in 125PS (92kW) and 155PS (122kW) tunes, along with an EcoBoost Hybrid variant – though details of the electrified model are to be confirmed.

A six-speed manual has been confirmed, which Ford says “has been optimised to make gear selection easier, more precise and quieter”, with automatic options likely as well.

Re: New Fiesta-based Compact SUV from Ford - Called the Puma

Look pretty SWEET in my view, and should be a great city based crossover. No point comparing this to the Ecosport, which has a different design language, and frankly has become a little long in the tooth with the same shell having been around for 6 years now. This one has nice flowing curves and less of a boxy shape, but it does seem to work pretty well. Especially in the yummy Ford blue shade And that steering wheel is beyond delicious !!

That looks more like a hatchback than a SUV.

And the tail lights remind me of the XUV 300 aka SsangYong Tivoli

Should look good even if its the size of Kicks and as tall as ecosport. Looks lovely but dimensions are the issue.

Lately crossovers are becoming more evolutionary versions of hatchbacks. The SUV looks that they were once to attract people into owning a SUVish vehicle is going away. These crossovers with lower floor heights than traditional ladder structures give better headroom without having the boxy tall cabin. Ground clearance also is not impacted owing to the unibody architecture.

'Puma' would be the last name I'd think of if I was asked to name this car. They could've reused that name for any one of their sedans or sports cars instead. This one reminds me of the weird-looking Nissan Juke. More like a fat, round frog or something out of a cartoon show.

Atleast the old Puma was a simple-looking coupe.

Just came across this video. Some design aspects seem very practical (boot space washing). Also, loved the idea of changing seat covers!

It’s clear that this vehicle is designed from an American perspective and for American markets. It’s bit pointless to comment on this car as if it’s designed for the Indian market or that it’s going to come anytime soon to our country. I do hope that many of these features and the design philosophy is carried over to the ‘desi’ vehicles that are reported to being worked on by Mahindra/Ford.

Ford has confirmed that a hot ST version of its new Puma crossover will arrive later this year and released official preview image.

2021 Ford Puma ST:

2021 Ford Puma ST prototype

Quote:
The new Puma is based on the same platform as the seventh-generation Fiesta, which is offered in ST guise, with a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, pumping out 200 PS (197 HP / 147 kW) and 290 Nm (214 lb-ft) of torque. So, it’s no surprise that the Puma ST will retain the same powertrain, which will be hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission driving the front wheels.

Given that the Fiesta ST takes 6.5 seconds to accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) and tops out at 232 km/h (144 mph), the slightly heavier Puma ST will be a bit slower.
