Acura shows some leg...the next-gen RDX

After Stabilizing Honda (with a completely new lineup) in the North American market after a decade of Ho-Hum products, They finally turn their attention to the ever weakening position of Acura. The first luxury division of any japanese car maker, known for great cars like the Legend, Integra and the evergreen (1st gen) NSX. Acura's current line up is often ostracized as not having enough of a differentiation to the Honda brand, using the same platform and engines, with minimal effort applied to upgrade the interior. Not to mention an infotainment system that feels a decade older than the rest of the car it sits in.

Many journalist have recently commented on how the current Honda line up in many ways seems more upmarket than Acura. The most important aspect in this redesign being the All new Acura exclusive platform. This Should help them penetrate new markets that Acura recently entered such as China, Russia and Kuwait (GCC in general in the near future). China already has a strong Honda following with 2 JV's in the country. With luxury SUV's gaining strong momentum, this product is perfectly suited for Acura to take advantage, hopefully sooner than later.

The third-generation Acura RDX Prototype will make its world debut at the 2018 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) on January 15 at 11:05 a.m. EST. Representing the most extensive Acura redesign in more than a decade, the new RDX is the first in a new generation of Acura products inspired by “Precision Crafted Performance” and signals the beginning of a new era for the luxury automaker.

Designed and developed for the first time in North America, the new RDX will be built on a new, Acura-exclusive platform and incorporates key design elements of two recent concepts – the Acura Precision Concept and Acura Precision Cockpit. The exterior styling adapts the low, wide and sleek presence of the Precision Concept to an SUV, and features strong character lines that run along the entire profile of the vehicle. From the Precision Cockpit, the third-generation RDX features an all-new interior design, user interface and operating system designed from a clean sheet.

The best-seller will be extensively redesigned from when it was first introduced a decade ago, built on an all-new platform and incorporating design elements from the Acura Precision Concept from almost two years ago.

There aren’t any details on powertrains at this time, but we suspect a variant of Honda’s 2.0-litre turbo-four under the hood and some variant of Acura’s all-wheel drive system.

I feel their designs are on a different line compared to the classier Merc / BMW's. Too much chrome for a few years, and now a futuristic looking designs. Design wise, Tesla may take it away from Acura.

Forget Audi, BMW, Lexus or Mercedes - I remember reading that Infiniti was outselling Acura in 2017!

Honda has completely destroyed Acura. Unappealing designs, too much in common with cheaper Hondas, FWD sedans (where competition was RWD), limited range of Crossovers, no real innovation...a missed opportunity. But then, Honda itself has lost its sense of direction in the last 5 years, so that's hardly surprising.

I would agree. They have worked a lot on Honda (especially larger models) and brought standards up to a level that Acura cars do not have much premium USPs left. Nissan has maintained the clear demarcation which is probably the reasons for Infinity doing better. Personally, I think most cars in US has the same features (these days, even Kias are totally loaded!) Just like the mobile phone market in India.

2021 Acura RDX scores 'Good' ratings in occupant safety and pedestrian protection tests, 'Acceptable' in whiplash tests, and 'Marginal' in low-speed maintenance cost tests performed by China's Insurance Automotive Safety Index (C-IASI).

The vehicle performed well even in the 25% offset rigid barrier test, in identical configuration to the US IIHS' small overlap test.
