Jaguar unveils new 2.0L 296 BHP petrol engine for XE, XF & F-Pace

Jaguar has introduced a new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine, which will power the 2018 XE, XF and F-Pace. The company claims that this new engine will provide enhanced acceleration figures for all cars.

The new 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol engine develops 296 BHP and 400 Nm of torque, while being mated to a ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic gearbox. The current 2.0-litre petrol engine from Jaguar is available in two states of tune - 197 BHP & 320 Nm and 237 BHP & 340 Nm.

According to the British automaker, this increase in power and torque outputs of the new Ingenium petrol engine has helped the engineers to cut short acceleration times of all three models. With the new engine, the XE sedan has a claimed 0-100 km/h acceleration time from of 5.5 seconds, down from the 6.8 seconds of the current model. Similarly, the 2018 XF sedan will be able to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in a company-claimed time of 5.8 seconds (for the AWD model), while the F-Pace performance SUV will do the same in 6.0 seconds.

The new 2.0L Ingenium petrol engine has already been introduced in the three models in the United Kingdom. Jaguar is expected to introduce the new engine options in the India-spec cars as well by the end of this year.

With the new engines, the XE is going to be a rocket. The BMW 330i only has 247Bhp and 350Nm at its disposal but is cheaper though. And these new engines I guess will only give them a reason to bump the price up more.

Holy Camoly - all of this from a 2.0L engine. That is quicker than bigger-engined 6-cylinder sedans. A 2.0L motor will also be cheaper, lighter & smaller. Downsizing is here to stay, but what the heck - with power figures like these, few owners will ever complain.

Must have quite a large (single) turbo. Also, unlike Volvo, there's no supercharger (over and above the turbo). Would be interesting to see if & how much lag it has in real world conditions.

The best AT gearbox there is.

GTO. The new engine will also have 2 states of tune: 240odd and 290odd HP. This is all about emissions which are supposed to be "remarkable".

Well the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO FQ400 production version in UK used to produce 405 BHP from its 2.0 litre 4 cylinder petrol engine.

Yes, but the EVO SQ400 was a super-tuned version of a full on performance-oriented track / racing machine. The XE is a regular family sedan in its class. That's what makes the numbers impressive.

Give the 9 speed automatic on JLRs a shot as well - you may like it better. I drove both the XE with the 8 speed and the Evoque with 9 speed autobox on back to back weekends this month. The 9 speed had the smoothest upshifts I have ever seen on an autobox. I had reservations with the Evoque having a 2 litre engine but the gearbox solved for all that within minutes of driving. The downshifts on the 9 speed in Evoque though were a bit jerkier than the 8 speed on XE.

Yet the Evo came with a full factory warranty. Goes to show that the engine was reliable enough even in that unreal state of tune. Also, the Evo is pretty easy to drive on a regular basis as well.
