Betting big on Compact /SUV's Volvo plans XC20 to rival Audi's Q2!

A Volvo XC20 small crossover is on the cards to fit beneath the upcoming XC40 and rival cars such as the Audi Q2

Volvo already has the platform for a small premium SUV and is close to launching a suitable range of three-cylinder engines

Sales of small SUVs are expected to exceed two million by 2018, according to forecaster LMC Automotive, having reached 1.4 million sales last year.

Most of these models are from mainstream volume manufacturers such as Nissan, Peugeot, Renault, and Suzuki. Audi’s recently launched Q2 is the only premium model in the segment, potentially indicating a major opportunity for Volvo.

This looks more hatch than their V40 does!!

But i don't think this is the kind of vehicle that can sway away the Q2 buyer,however "poser" the Q2 may be, its still similar to a Tiguan underneath has mostly 4 cylinder engines and looks more SUV than hatch.

Btw, if they would give proper 4wd and low range on suvs of this size, that would open up a whole new segment. Similar to say a Luxury short wheel base Pajero/vitara.

Electric Volvo XC20 SUV planned to sit below XC40.






Volvo will grow its SUV offering with a new compact model on a new electric car platform that could take the XC20 name.

Volvo boss Hakan Samuelsson:

We will also use SEA (EV-specific underpinnings, called Sustainable Experience Architecture.)
We’ll use it for a smaller car, where I think it’s very practical and smart for us to share that, so we can have a cost structure for a smaller car that’s very competitive. It’s difficult to push the CMA platform [the XC40’s chassis], which is a combination platform for EVs and combustion-engined cars, further down. So if you want to do a smaller car than XC40 then SEA can do it. We will use it for that.

Samuelsson also admitted that the first Volvo sub-40 model is indeed likely to be a small SUV.

Let’s see what it will be called, but it will be a car that’s definitely in line with customers’ expectations.”

No time frame has been given for the ‘XC20’, but confirmed that it is one of the cars at the heart of Volvo’s plan to fill half of its sales volumes with pure-electric models by 2025.

Allegedly dubbed the XC20, it was the subject of speculation in the past, but it seems that the Swedish automaker might have finally confirmed it in a rendering attached to their recent announcement of going full electric by the end of the decade.

Volvo’s Entry-Level Electric Crossover Will Arrive In 2023.

The brand is well aware that, in the current market landscape, coupes only sell if they're also crossovers. That's why it's coupe-fied the XC40 with the new C40. Same story with a supermini.

So, given the marque wants to enter the B-segment, it'll have to do so with a cute crossover. This baby SUV is expected to be electric-only from its launch, with either XC20 or XC30 badging, in order to be in line with the brand's plan to be fully-electric by 2030.

First exclusive image of the future small electric SUV from Volvo.

Technically close to the recent Smart #1, this future urban SUV should receive a "real" surname and no longer respond to a code of type XC20 or XC30, while EX has been filed. It will therefore be based on a SEA Geely-Volvo platform, which already exists in China, where this Swedish of about 4.25 m will be produced.

More compact, this small trendy Volvo will therefore maintain a high-end positioning, especially since the Smart proposal, with 272 hp and a 66 kWh battery, is not particularly discounted. However, the Swedish will not be able to do less in terms of autonomy (420 km announced), connectivity (12.8-inch touch panel 9.2-inch counter ...) and comfort equipment than this Chinese cousin while seeking to take the lead in terms of safety
