2017 Audi Q5 makes its world debut at Paris Motor Show

Audi has unveiled the second generation of its Q5 midsize SUV at the Paris Motor Show. It will go on sale in various international markets from early next year.

The second-generation Audi Q5 is based on Volkswagen Group's MLB Evo platform, which also underpins the latest A4 sedan and the full-size Q7 SUV. The Q5 is now 4.66-meters long, 1.89 meters wide and 1.66 meters tall. The wheelbase is scaled at 2.82 meters. This makes the new model larger in every way as compared to the first-gen Q5 that was revealed in 2008. However, use of lightweight, high strength steel and aluminum in the construction of the platform has helped Audi to decrease the weight of the new model by up to 90 kg.

Built on Audi's latest design language, the 2017 Q5 shares various design characteristics with its larger SUV sibling - the Audi Q7. It gets a singleframe grille at the front, flanked by either LED or Matrix LED headlights, depending on the model. The side profile showcases the small front and rear overhangs, a couple of character lines on the door panels and flared wheel arches. At the rear, the new-gen Q5 gets a curved tailgate that tapers on to the SUV's fenders, and sharper taillights that can also be opted with Audi's dynamic turn signals.

On the inside, customers of the 2017 Q5 can opt for Audi's Virtual Cockpit system that makes use of a 12.3-inch display as the instrument cluster. A head-up display is also added as an optional extra. Additionally, a 7.0-inch free-standing screen will be a standard feature on the car, and will take care of the infotainment needs of occupants. Top-end models will come equipped with an 8.3-inch screen that is compatible with MMI navigation plus with MMI touch. Other optional extras available inside the Q5's cabin include a heated steering wheel and an ambient lighting system with 30 different colours.

Powering options on the 2017 Audi Q5 include four TDI diesels and one TFSI petrol engine. The 2.0 TDI engine is available in three states of tune: 148 BHP, 161 BHP and 188 BHP. The larger 3.0 TDI mill churns out 282 BHP and 620 Nm of torque. Petrol duties are handled by a 2.0 TFSI engine, rated at 248 BHP. Transmission options on offer include a six-speed manual, a seven-speed S tronic and an eight-speed tiptronic (only available with the 3.0 TDI). The Q5 is available with a FWD or an AWD system, depending on the model.

I thought the new A4 hardly looked different. In this case except for the grille, you can hardly tell the difference from the earlier one

Audi has tried to maintain a familiar look of the Q5 that has been the segment leader worldwide. With the new generation vehicle looking so similar to the old one, there are bound to be people who will be disappointed. Overall its not as boring as the new Q7 which has lost its desirability quotient. This one competes with the GLC, X3 & XC60 and IMHO its does beat them all in the looks department.
