Mahindra to use Pininfarina branding for luxury cars

Quote:
New Delhi: In pursuit of a luxury brand, Mumbai-based automaker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd has decided to develop and sell products under the Pininfarina brand, an Italian design and engineering company that the Mahindra Group acquired in December 2015 for around $185 million, said Pawan Goenka, the company’s executive director.

Rumour: Mahindra-Pininfarina to develop electric super car

Speculations about Mahindra and Pininfarina working on an electric super car have been doing rounds on the internet ever since the former's IT arm acquired a controlling stake in the Italian company. Now, Anand Mahindra - Mahindra's chairman has claimed that Pininfarina's future plans include designing its own car.

Mr. Mahindra made the announcement after the London round of the FIA Formula E championship, in which Mahindra has a racing team. The Chairman believes that Pininfarina is a brand in itself, and thus needs to not only design cars for other brands, but to design its own car, which is something that the design house has never done before.

Pininfarina has recently designed the H2 speed Hydrogen-fueled concept car (pictured here) for a Swiss company named Green GT, which was also showcased at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.

Over the years, Mahindra has become a prominent player in the electric car domain with the e2o and the Formula E racing experience. The Indian automaker plans to use its electric vehicle technology in the Pininfarina-designed car, which is expected to be launched with a Pininfarina badge.

That said, even electric race cars are pretty boring. See the Formula E Mahindra car in action here. Almost like a fast toy!

Re: Rumour: Mahindra-Pininfarina to develop electric super car

Mahindra-Reva were in the process of developing an all-electric sports car called the Halo.

We'd seen this car on display during the 2014 Auto Expo. http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/indian...ml#post3363807

The Halo is an interesting car and hopefully, we should see it in production soon. It remains to be seen if Pininfarina is working on the same car or if it's an all new car on an entirely different platform.

Rumour: Mahindra developing electric SUV & performance car

Mahindra Electric is reportedly working on a 380V electric powertrain that will soon make it to production under an electric SUV and a performance car. This new powertrain was previewed under the e2o Sport hatch concept at last year's Auto Expo in Greater Noida.

Currently, Mahindra's Electric range consists of the e2oPlus, eSupro and eVerito, which are offered with either of the two available powertrains - 48V and 72V. With the larger 380V setup, Mahindra is aiming to enhance its car's range as well as performance. This new electric powertrain is expected to be used in an electric SUV, which might be based on the Mahindra Scorpio or the XUV500. Additionally, the company might also employ it for its range of commercial vehicles.

The manufacturer has also reportedly indicated that it will be developing a new high-end electric performance car. Reports suggest that Mahindra will be using its racing expertise from the Formula-E race team to develop the powertrain, while the design will be taken care of by Pininfarina.

Re: Mahindra developing world's most affordable electric SUV!

Mahindra has two problems here in their quest for developing EVs.

1) Target Country
2) Supporting Infrastructure.

If Mahindra targets developing countries like India etc. Well, however good their vehicles may turn out to be, but without a supporting infrastructure, it will amount to almost nothing. How many of us, however patriotic we are, go ahead and buy an all electric car/UV if it lands on our shores in the next couple of years? Hardly any! That's because we simply do not have the supporting infrastructure. I would take many years to develop such an infrastructure. The infrastructure should come first; then followed by the EVs, not the other way round.

Someone said above about Bolero->Scorpio->XUV. But you are forgetting that these had the same fundamentals of operation. i.e. run on Petrol/Diesel, which are supported by ample availability and infrastructure. If Mahindra were to team up with the GOI to develop such an infrastructure for their EVs, atleast in the cities it is targeting to launch, then there is scope for them to succeed. This would be a win-win situation for both the GOI and Mahindra. GOI would get to show this as a way of modernizing India, and Mahindra would have the first-mover advantage; on the lines of Maruti with their M800.

Secondly, if Mahindra thought. Hey, lets launch our EVs in Norway. They have a very good supporting infrastructure and a very good market for EVs. Then I am sorry to say. They will not succeed. They neither have the brand recall (something that TATA has gained after acquiring JLR) nor the quality to compete with those behemoths who are already established there. I have seen the reviews of the XUV5OO on Australian portals and I must admit, many of those are quite underwhelming.

Bit of a tricky path, I must say.

Mahindra’s Pininfarina To Rival Tesla, Will Debut As Automaker

"Mahindra’s Pininfarina To Rival Tesla, Will Debut As Automaker" - https://www.motorbeam.com/mahindras-...but-automaker/

The above mildly eye-brow raising post came from Motorbeam in my in-box today - I wonder what M&M hope to gain from this. If it is to be an arm of their e-vehicles effort, I hope they succeed.

Re: Mahindra’s Pininfarina To Rival Tesla, Will Debut As Automaker

Pininfarina can certainly help Mahindra take a huge leap in how their cars look. Certainly the EVs. With the E2O+ currently looking like a detailed microwave safe container on wheels, they need some good designers even to generate appeal in local market, let alone taking on Tesla.

Re: Mahindra to use Pininfarina branding for luxury cars

Pininfarina is going to develop a Chiron rival. Armed with hundred million seed funding from Mahindra, and technical collaboration with Rimac, the car under Pininfarina brand will be showcased around 2019. It will probably be called PF Zero. After that a Urus rival is in pipeline.

Mahindra EV Bugatti Chiron rival under development, the Europe-based start-up is likely to be called

Just saw this in my in-box from Motor Beam, and am not sure if it has been reported earlier in the forum.
Mods kindly remove this if it has appeared earlier.

"Mahindra EV Bugatti Chiron rival under development, the Europe-based start-up is likely to be called Automobili Pininfarina".
The link is : https://www.motorbeam.com/mahindra-e...r-development/

The blurb reads :-

"Mahindra’s plans for developing high-performance cars with Pininfarina are taking shape as the homegrown automaker is floating a start-up to boost its electric car ambitions. The Scorpio maker got the first-mover advantage in the nascent EV market in India after it acquired EV maker Reva in 2010. It now has huge ambitions to not only join the global EV race but is also making a bid for the top-end of the EV spectrum with plans to develop high-end, low-volume models to rival the best sports cars and SUVs in the world.

For this purpose, Mahindra has roped in former Audi India chief Micheal Perschke to head the EV company which is internally known as ‘Project Montana’. Micheal Perschke has been assigned with the job of building the high-performance EV start-up from the scratch. The new company is likely to be called ‘Automobili Pininfarina’ and will see an initial investment of around $100 million (approximately Rs. 647 crores) from Mahindra. Post this infusion of funds, the company will look for outside investments to scale up operations. The new high-performance EVs will have design and styling done by Pininfarina and an official announcement with regards to this is expected at the inaugural Formula E race in Rome on 14th April 2018.

The new EVs will feature a Pininfarina badge thus fulfilling the dream of its founders to make a road-going car under its own brand name. A recent tweet by Anand Mahindra confirms the same. Leading the model line-up will be an electric supercar, internally known as the PF-Zero which is essentially a Bugatti Chiron rival and PF1 which will go against the likes of the Lamborghini Urus, the world’s fastest SUV. And for this, Mahindra has roped in Rimac, a specialist EV company that displayed its second hypercar, the C_Two concept at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. According to a Croatian-based company, the C_Two concept makes 1915 HP and can accelerate from 0-100 km/hr in just 1.85 seconds! Additionally, Rimac is also credited with the development and manufacture of the battery system for the Aston Martin-Red Bull Racing’s AM-RB 001 hypercar and also the Koenigsegg Regera.

The new EV company will take inputs from Mahindra Racing whose success in Formula E racing brings invaluable know-how and experience with electric powertrains and battery management. According to company sources, the new start-up is likely to look at strategic partners for additional funding to expand its line-up, with an aim to launch 4 models at a total investment of $500 million (approximately Rs. 3200 crores)."
