Suzuki Jimny draws overwhelming response in UK.

Quote:

it has had 4500 people sign up on its website as “interested” in the new Jimny, a first for the brand. That’s 150% of the previous model’s best annual volume. The problem for Suzuki is going to be the number it can build, because demand in Japan has been “staggering

As per reports Maruti says this wont make it to India anytime soon. Mainly because they think it to be a very niche vehicle.
However, if Jeep launches the Renegade here at around 15-18 lacs and compete with the Creta and BRV and all, then there is a possibility for the Jimny to find its niche too and nip away at the heels of the S Cross, Freestyle, EcoSport etc.

I doubt for three reasons

1. The space available in Jimny is way less than a BRv or Creta. Pictures of new Jimny may be misleading about its true size.
2. The engine option is only petrol
3. Jimny is engineered as a hard core offroader. It cannot compete with the softroaders like the named ones.

Just like the S cross 1.6 or Kizashi, a Jimny will not invoke any interest for Maruti Suzuki where the minimum sales numbers matter most.

I was watching this video last night and thinking that the Jimny looks quite nice and there is a great resemblance with the Defender from certain angles. Today I saw this -

https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/suzuki...rover-defender

"Japanese tuning company DAMD can turn your Suzuki Jimny into a tiny Land Rover Defender or even a Mercedes G-Class
While customers wait patiently for JLR to reveal the new Defender, a Japanese tuning company called DAMD have created a unique body kit for the Suzuki Jimny that makes it resemble a Land Rover Defender.

Called the 'Little D', the body kit includes nose alterations such as adding another headlight bulb for the Defender's signature trio and "LITTLE D" lettering above the grille, which ditches the Wrangler-like vertical slats for horizontal bars. Also included is a larger front bumper with a more prominent skid plate, while mud flaps, knobby off-road tires, bare spare tire, and the angled rear bumper made to look like the Defender's visible chassis complete the look. The Jimny's boxy profile remains as do the wheel arches and roof cap."

Test drove the Jimny at a small rural Suzuki dealer in Germany (100 odd km from Frankfurt) from whom I bought my used VW Golf Wagon.

As has been pointed out by others on the forum, this is a very niche product. Its super cheap (<20K) by EU standards, but you get what you pay for - namely a small vehicle with offroad abilities. Nothing more, nothing less.

Exterior -
All flat panels, squared off design makes it stand out. Looks like a 80s car in some respects sitting next to the curvy Swift / Baleno in the same showroom.
Its SMALL! Its actually smaller than the Gypsy (which is a previous gen Jimny?)

Interior -
Budget grade interiors. Looks like a parts bin special with most parts shared with other Suzuki products (ICE, Steering Wheel, stalks etc)
Space is good for 2 adults and 2 kids in the back. Its either luggage or the kids. You decide.

Driving
The Jimmy has a 1.5litre petrol engine (I suspect this is the new Suzuki engine). On rural roads with lots of farm traffic, I couldn't test the acceleration, but it felt adequate and got up to 80KMPH fairly quickly. Its not noisy at that speed, but you can feel the engine starting to work harder, primarily due to the aerodynamics at play. Wind Noise is a lot more pronounced.

I couldn't really take it off road - so can't comment.

Will it sell in India? I doubt it. Its too small, too basic, too niche to appeal to anyone but the hardcore off road crowd. I am not sure there is a large enough market for that in India for the economics to work.

Here is brilliant review, or just boy's banter I should say, on the new Jimny.

Absolutely lovely! I want one even more now!

Has anyone here wondered like me why the roof antenna is mounted on the side and not centrally for the new Jimny? Well it is to not foul with luggage and roof rack since the boot is practically non-existent. :) All that and more on the video above.

18 thousand quid for a Jimny lol: Suzuki thinks too much of itself, this will never ever sell, first because Suzuki is a cheap brand in UK and secondly 17 thousand pounds is a lot of money for a thing like the Jimny!

Suzuki Jimny reaches LA (US) - Being driven for the WORLD CAR AWARDS.

SVP drives the Jimny at LA for the World car drive,

Sums up the Jimny, if at all it comes to India.

Quote:

But the truth is I would also buy it over a TUV 300, Nexon, EcoSport, Creta, and dare I say - Duster, just as quickly. Those are all family cars in India aren't they? The Jimny is anything but. And no one has dared to go there in India. It's about bloody time someone did

He said it well! It IS about “bl**dy” time Maruti Suzuki did take this small lifestyle segment seriously! I would love to own one of these! Ideal for a Zero-Kid Hubby-Wife pair and there is enough space for some luggage and possibly a pet dog in the back with the seats down.

How I Wish the MSIL fellas would bring this in!

A 5 door Suzuki Jimny is rumoured to be in works and will be built in Thailand.

With a length of ~ 4m , wheel base extended by 250 mm, but will alter ramp over angles , but will appear to a larger audience.

Speculated to debut in 2020.
