"Can we see a back-to-basics 4x4 in India anytime soon?
CVR: The issue for us is that globally the Jimny is a three-door vehicle – something that doesn’t work in India. At the end of the day, the Indian customer wants a 5-door vehicle for practical reasons. We’ve not been able to arrive to a definite conclusion. The feedback from the market has not been positive. What people want is a 5-door vehicle, which we don’t have. Also, the Jimny is a narrow vehicle, so width is also an issue. The current Gypsy is a wide-track vehicle. But, I think, from a lifestyle perspective, there is some potential."
That means the launch of the Jimny in its new avatar in India is a very distant dream.
My question: The current Gypsy is also a 3-door, and the width is just 1540mm. And it sells around 500 units on an average per month, which is not bad for a 20-year old basic life style vehicle. Then how come the new Jimny that much unacceptable? Also, Maruti has a very strong development team, and they can surely redesign the new Jimny to make it 5-door and launch it in India, IMO.

My point exactly!
I've said this before, and I will say it again. The new Jimny is well under 4 meters in length. This should give MSIL's development team, the potential to exploit the 4-m rule and design a 5-door Gypsy exclusively for India.
Suzuki Jimny- some facts and future plans.
- 20 Years in the market and 349,772 units being sold. Demand exists even today.(
1579 units sold in EU-Feb-18)
- Jimny has a cult following and is an Iconic car like VW Beetle, Land Rover Defender or Fiat Panda first generation.
- 2018 Jimny to arrive in showrooms this Summer ( Japan -July 2018)
- The new Jimny will retain its current DNA - it will use a modified generation of the current generation that maintains the chassis solution
and the All Grip Pro all-wheel drive system with a two-stage reducer.
-
Dimensions will grow a bit- from the current length of 3.69 m it will be now at 3.91 m
- Engine details not yet revealed - will likely have the 1.0l Turbo petrol delivering 112-hp and 170 Nm @2000 rpm

UK:
- The next-generation Suzuki Jimny will be revealed near the end of 2018 before arriving on roads at the start of the following year.
- Stock depletes, only existing stock of the model - fewer than 200 units - are available for purchase.
- It's predicted to land at the Tokyo motor show in October
-The fourth-generation model is being developed with the feedback of existing Jimny owners in mind, who rank its effective off-road capabilities and robustness more highly than on-road performance.
- Road handling will still be improved, but the car's unique selling point was its hardy nature, so this will remain the focus during development.
- Suzuki has been testing the car in four countries - one of which is Britain
-No diesel engine is expected
- Manual low-range gear selector could be retained in the Jimny

The looks are simple yet involving. With a turbo charged petrol engine and 4x4 option, it will be a worthy replacement of Gypsy in India.
The Gypsy has been a synonym of "go anywhere" attitude and has a similar fan following as that of Royal Enfield.
I hope it is now offered with modern tech, plush interiors along with bells & whistles.
I have to start saving money for this machine !!!
I would love this car in the 1.3/1.6 Fiat diesel engines. If launched in India Suzuki should consider at least a diesel even if it's their own 1.5 l variant.
Light, SWB, Hard Top will be the distinct advantages of this one in off-roading.
The old Jimny has always been considered to be a giant 4X4 killer, and I'm sure this one will too (probably even better performance and configurations).
It's amazing how Suzuki has this knack of making robust, reliable and dependable vehicles at such wallet friendly prices. India is clear evidence of this.

Oh my god! If its going to be made right here in Gujarat, they bloody well damn launch this thing here!
I never thought I would be so bloody irresistibly waiting for a "Suzuki" model to launch in India. This might well bring a next wave of dominance for Suzuki in India, still better known for making and selling only commuter class, reliable but boring cars.
If it can seat 4 comfortably, have decent boot space and (not to mention) is fun to drive, I would plunge my life savings to buy this one.

Unfortunately, Maruti is run by accountants. They simply don't care about enthusiast cars. Unless it sells like hot cakes, they don't care. Since Jimny is a 3-door SWB car, they know it won't sell in huge numbers. They may even consider selling 2WD Jimny to reduce cost, and increase FE.
I remember what our friend late Behram used to say, even the senior management at Mahindra didn't know the purpose of 4WD.
Suzuki Jimny to arrive at Japanese dealerships in
JULY, ( Eu in Oct.)
The ladder frame and the two series configuration of mini car & small car version Sierra will continue from the current type.
Quote:
The power unit is a 660 cc turbo mini car, and a small car (Jimny Sierra) is a 1 L turbo, both seems to be equipped with a mild hybrid. A collision mitigation brake is also prepared, and the safety performance is expected to be greatly improved.
