Mercedes-Benz have teased their upcoming high-performance sports car through a video clip. Named the AMG GT-R, this new sports car is being touted as the fastest and most powerful Mercedes ever produced. The new Mercedes AMG GT-R will make its world premiere at the Goodwood festival of speed on June 24.

Though technical specifications haven't been revealed yet, the GT-R is expected to come with a 4.0-litre bi-turbo petrol V8 engine mated to a 7-speed AMG dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Though this is the same transmission unit that comes with the AMG GT S, Mercedes engineers have reportedly tuned the gearbox to handle the additional power and torque. The engine will be able to churn out around 570 BHP. Suspension, brakes, and steering components too have been tweaked a bit to handle the surge in power output of the GT-R.

Mercedes claims that this power will help the GT-R to be a second quicker to the ton, as compared to the AMG GT S which develops 503 BHP and can do the 0-100 kmph sprint in 3.8 seconds.

Well GT-R means Gran Turismo Racer / Racing.

Its like a designation.

Many cars other than Nissan GTR have used 'GTR', Like;

BMW M3 GTR
McLaren F1 GTR
McLaren P1 GTR

Also Mercedes have previously used this for the CLK GTR

Even there is a touring bike going by the name of Kawasaki 1400 GTR

Of course, I am aware of that. The first thing that comes to one's mind at the mention of GT-R is Nissan's. For other cars that you mentioned, the "GTR" is a suffix to an existing marque, such as M3 or F1. In case of Nissan, GT-R is a marque in itself. So i am thinking that Mercedes is going after that prestigious badge

Dude, Mercedes-AMG is a standalone unit, a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler. If I remember correctly, cars that were earlier "Mercedes XX AMG" are now badged "Mercedes-AMG XX". And this started with the GT, their flagship, in 2014. What I am trying to say is that the "GT" or "GT-R" is not an enhancement to an existing marque (cue BMW M3, McLaren P1, etc), but the marque in itself.

Coming back to the car itself; cannot wait to see how it performs. 0-100 in 2.8s puts it in Aventador territory!

The only cars that come to my mind when I hear the words GTR are the Nissan, McLaren F1 GTR and the iconic Mercedes CLK-GTR.
