Volvo used Snapchat to reveal the teaser pictures, a very unique, unconventional and interesting strategy !

Add to that comments like "Not your daddy's Volvo" and it clearly means that the V40 & XC40 will be aimed at the youngsters.

Volvo has teased the next-gen '40 series' family of models which is expected to be unveiled next week. The company, however, hasn't confirmed any details of the cars, except that they belong to the brand's smallest family of models, the '40 series'.

It was also confirmed that the two cars will sit on the all-new CMA platform, which has been co-developed with Volvo's owner, Geely, and will underpin the manufacturer's smallest model range. CMA is designed to be premium enough to allow Geely develop more upmarket products while supporting a more profitable, wider range of Volvo’s '40 series' models.

The images also confirm that the concepts will closely follow Volvo's current design conventions, with the 'Thor's Hammer' LED daytime running lights set in intricate clusters, and an uncomplicated front-end styling.

The next-generation Volvo V40 and XC40 will be powered by a mix of three- and four-cylinder engines, with plug-in hybrids and potentially fully electric versions of the cars also being developed

Volvo has unveiled two concept cars to introduce its new CMA platform, the structure that will underpin its new family of medium-sized C-segment models due in 2017.





Named Concept 40.1 and Concept 40.2, the two design studies revealed today at Volvo’s Gothenburg HQ give us a very good idea of what to expect from the company’s upcoming XC40 small SUV and next-generation V40 hatchback.

Arguably the most important of the two is the 40.1 concept. It previews the new XC40, which will be the first production car built upon the fresh CMA [‘Compact Modular Architecture’] platform, and gain Volvo access to the lucrative global small SUV market.

But what's the second design, neither a sedan not an SUV! Seems like they are taking the S60 Cross Country madness to a whole new level!

So the trend of creating 'SUDANS' (SUV+SEDAN) continues with this horrible concept by Volvo. I think the X6 and GLE COUPE are the worst looking creatures i have seen, i wonder why people are buying them? The X6 is apparently successful.

As an existing V40 owner, this design especially the raised sedan is appears ghastly to me. No way I'd put my money down on it.

After the beautiful designs of the XC90, S90 and V90, this one doesn't appeal at all.

Volvo has unveiled two concept cars based on the company's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). Called the 40 series concepts, they will come with electrification and autonomous drive technologies.

The concept cars will be powered by a battery alone or a twin engine plug-in hybrid powertrain. The first 40 series car is expected to go into production in 2017.

The T5 Twin engine is based on the new, 3-cylinder petrol engine. It comes along with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, which is coupled to an electric motor. The cars will come with a front wheel drive configuration.

Volvo's global sales for the first quarter of 2016 have gone up by 11.9% to 1,20,591 units. The company sold 5,03,000 in 2015. It aspires to sell around 8,00,000 cars a year and plans to have sold a total of up to 1 million electrified cars by 2025 globally.

Well, I agree completely. The C-SUV looks contemporary and definitely has got the looks! But they've messed up the sedan with the SUVish stance. Why can't everything just not try to be an SUV anymore?

The notch-back styling would look much better with a lowered & normal ground clearance. I seriously hope the designers get struck with sanity & it's altered for good.

Agree with reignofchaos. It seems to be a horrible concept by Volvo. I don't know why they don't continue with the design language similar to the XC90, which looks ahead of its time! As a new V40 owner, I can certainly say It cant get sexier than this! I just love this design!

The Swedish auto giant, Volvo, is preparing to launch a series of compact models in the Indian market from the next financial year onwards as a part of it's portfolio expansion in the entry-level luxury segment.

These models will be pitted against the likes of the BMW X1, Audi A3, Audi Q3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA, so as to tap into this particular segment which has seen the most action in the past few years, driven by young urban customers.

The first models in Volvo's compact model range will be a Sport-Utility Vehicle (codenamed "Concept 40.1") and a luxury sedan (codenamed "Concept 40.2"). Both concept cars will enter production from 2017 onwards at Volvo's plant in Ghent, Belgium. Their Indian launch will take place within 6-8 months from their global launch.

Entry-level luxury cars from German manufacturers are priced upwards of Rs 26 lakh in the Indian market. "Entry SUVs are extremely important for a market like India," said Peter Mertens, senior vice-president for research & development. "We are seeing a lot of growth coming in from the segment in BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries. Also, in the Americas, the trend has become apparent."

Apart from the SUV and the sedan, the car maker will also develop a hatchback under the 40 series. Volvo has decided to have newer energy alternatives for all car lines developed on the new common module architecture (CMA) platform.

Volvo XC40 Concept 40.1 -The Volvo XC40 will be the car maker's first compact SUV, set to go on sale in 2018 with three-cylinder and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

The XC40, described as the beginning of a new Volvo design generation, will be closely based on the 40.1, which was first revealed in May.

The 40.1’s sister saloon study, Concept 40.2, unveiled at the same time, also points strongly to the expected launch of a V40 hatch once the crossover is established in the market. It will also adopt the concept’s crisp, elegant lines and could incorporate the 40.2’s clever hatchback versatility delivered in a notchback body design

The first of the new 40-series cars, the XC40, should hit showrooms early in 2018. It is likely to be the first of a three-pronged 40-series range consisting of the XC40, the V40 hatchback, which is due six months later, and a V40 estate, expected in 2019.

The XC40 will also be the first Volvo to introduce the long-promised modular 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine, which is derived from the four-cylinder 2.0-litre diesel and petrol range launched several years ago. The engines will come as both diesel and petrol variants, with and without turbocharging.

The XC40 range-topper will be a petrol-powered plug-in hybrid called T5 Twin Engine. It will use a 180bhp petrol version of the new three-cylinder engine, supported by a 74bhp electric motor. Power will be directed to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, with the electric motor directly driving the gearbox shaft that carries second, fourth and sixth gears. The XC40 T5 Twin Engine will have a battery-only range of about 30 miles.

Volvo plans to concentrate on plug-in hybrids because it believes their viable batteryonly range will most suit future inner-city clean-air legislation.

The glossy black framing already looks to be a fingerprint and dust nightmare while the screen appears to have the same 9.2-inch diagonal.

check out the generous amount of rear legroom and the fold-out tables likely to be offered as optional equipment. also observe the design of the fixed glass area, thus confirming the production version of the XC40 will have third-side windows unlike the 40.1 concept

I don't know what brief the designers were working on but they have sucked the soul out with these new styling. The current designs are so perfect in a way that the cars seem to have strong characters. The new ones are more like industrial appliances.

If the idea was to get a sophisticated minimalistic look, the designers have gone 'overboard' with it. Quite an irony!
