This headline would perhaps invite snickers (not the chocolate bar) and muffled grunts of laughter from most people but bear with me for a few more lines. As someone who has driven the compact and beautiful E90 3 Series and the more refined, smoother F30 I do understand that the 3 Series has a heritage and literal track record that is difficult to beat by any established brand, period. Audi and Mercedes have failed, that's because of BMW's single emphasis on fun, feel-some driving even at the cost of refinement or ride quality. BMW is the only luxury brand I personally admire and respect, their cars sell themselves with little marketing or advertising and that right there is proven owner endorsement.

The A4's and C-Class's are old rivals, the Jaguar has joined in now but just as news arrived that Genesis is launching an entry-level luxury sports car, all the players have raised their eyebrows and are awaiting first prototypes to be out to see just how strong a punch it will lay out. I would surely not take this model lightly just by looking at the team that is behind it, they consist of :

1) Peter Schreyer : Design chief of Hyundai Group, recruited from Audi/VW.
2) Luc Donckerwolke : Design chief of Genesis, recruited from Bentley/Lamborghini.
3) Albert Biermann - Chief of engineering division of Genesis/Hyundai N, recruited from BMW Motorsport division where he was chief engineer and dynamics specialist for 3 decades. It wouldn't be wrong to assume he made BMW what it is today.
4) Manfred Fitzgerald - Head of Genesis, formerly Director of Brand & Design at Lamborghini S.P.a

Under the hood the G70 will be a 2.0 Litre engine, with 245 hp connected to an 8-Speed gearbox. The grunt will be all of 352 nm and will mostly have the RDFM setup (rear wheel drive, front mid-engine layout) as is the case with all BMW's. Since this will be Mr.Biermann's first full-fledged development project I assume the body to have 50/50 weight distribution as well (BMW influence). Also rumoured is an electric motor to assist the engine for peak torque during initial speeds.

The interiors boast of a 4K curved display with an all new innovative 3D touch MMI, although I think that was just for the New York Concept G70 which was displayed a few weeks ago. I feel this will be the first of the Hyundai Group cars which will change the way people feel about it. With so much of experience between its creators, there is little that can go wrong with it.

The Genesis sedan and coupe along with the Equus greatly changed my perception towards Hyundai as a brand.

Though Hyundai failed to make a Lexus like splash (more to do with the current luxo car market dynamics, than the lack of separate brand), admire them in launching the second generation as well as starting to create a Genesis sub brand.

The 3er fighter is surely in a tough segment with the 3er being a global favorite, but mere presence in the segment will do Genesis good.

Though Genesis suffers from the same handicap as Lexus (no diesels), they could very well try to launch the Genesis here in India

Wow.

It seems to be a fantastic vehicle from the design/thought perspective.
Nowadays, most car makers are making forays into segments that they have never been in before. Eg. the crossover boom has made many car makers wade into unchartered waters.

Looking Hyundai's team, the vehicle should be very good. And if they can match BMW levels of quality/finish/engineering and match it with Hyundai levels of after sales/low cost maintenance, it could be a fantastic idea.

Can't wait to see what they come up with.

A fully loaded Genesis here in Australia is cheaper than an entry level C-Class/3 Series/A4 and yet it does not sell. I wonder where this new car will slot, above or below Genesis.

This will slot one segment below Genesis. I assume that G70 will be in the 3 Series segment, the Genesis G80 will be in the 5 Series segment and the G90/EQ900 will be on par with 7 Series. Also in the pipeline are 2 SUVs from the brand.

G70 Launched!

Available in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the G70 will come with either a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a 3.3-liter turbo V-6 for the U.S. market. The U.S. will not receive the diesel, and Hyundai said it currently has no plans for an electrified version.

The 3.3-liter V-6 generates around 365 hp and does 0 to 62 mph in 4.7 seconds, Genesis said. It has a top speed of 167 mph.
A base 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo is also available (250HP, 260 Lb/ft estimated), while some markets will also get a 2.2-liter diesel variant.

The athletic, entry-level offering is expected to arrive in the U.S. next spring as a 2019 model after going on sale in South Korea on Sept. 20.The G70 shares a platform with the new Stinger from Hyundai Motor Group sibling brand Kia, but the Genesis model uses a more conventional sedan profile than the Kia.

Inside, the car eschews wood trim for brushed aluminum. Designers said wood would be reserved for the more upmarket G80 and that the sportier G70 needed a more high-tech feel.Quilted leather door panels and Nappa leather seats exude a premium aura.An 8-inch touch screen display supports MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Audio.

Car and Driver's test drive of the prototype 2.0T and 3.3T


IMO I see a lot of influences from the new Infiniti Q50, Alpha Romeo Gulia and the interior is obviously inspired by Mercedes and Audi which is a good thing. Should prove to be a strong competitor to the Q50, Lexus IS and Jaguar XE if not the 3 series/C-Class/A4.

This is basically Hyundai's inteprertation of the Kia Stinger with the same engine and a different body shell. I prefer the Kia though as far as looks are concerned.

Guess no one has posted reviews on this site yet. This is the review of the 3.3 litre V6 Engine with 365 horsepower, a true competitor to the BMW 3 Series. Best part is this car offers a segment first manual transmission with LSD. RWD or AWD is an option as well, another bonus.

Looks like Albert Biermann has struck again. I find the interiors simply the most well designed in this budget.

The front end looks very Volvo-esque. If they bring it to India and undercut the Germans, it could probably compete with the camry, superb and accord.

One major advantage to Genesis G70 is the availability of Stick shift. Even though it doesn't come with 3.3l V6, Manual transmission on 2.0 liter turbo engine is no slouch either. Cherry on top for Genesis as a brand is the 5 year new car warranty and 10 years power-train warranty here in US.

2022 Genesis G70 unveiled

The vehicle goes on sale in its home market first and then launches elsewhere, like the US, in 2021.

The 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder would replace the existing 2.0-liter powerplant in the refreshed G70. It makes 290 horsepower (216 kilowatts) and 310 pound-feet (420 Newton-meters) of torque. This would be an increase of 38 hp (28 kW) and 50 lb-ft (67 Nm) of torque.
