Re: The next-gen BMW 3-Series (G20). EDIT: Now unveiled I got a first hand opportunity to get behind the wheel of the G20 (320D). I can only say that all the reviews about the car are absolutely true.
Only negative in my opinion is that the car is bigger than before and the kidney grill is larger. For someone not keen about details, will find no difference in the grill size. The best part of the car is that every version gets LED headlights as standard which even the latest C class does not provide. The Adaptive LEDs are quite impressive and I cannot comment about the Laser lights as I did not get any opportunity to try it out.
Being a F30 owner, I found the quality of switches and materiels used in the interior, fit and finish is two segments above. F30, in terms of quality is not bad but does not give a premium feel which this G20 gets right.
Driving experience is on a different level altogether. The adaptive suspension is needed only for M340i or a proper M car. All others should be more than happy with the regular suspension, as it provides enough confidence in all driving situations and is very sporty, dynamic and comfortable at the same time. Steering is electrical yet provides enough feedback. Only expert drivers and those taking a non-M car to race track will complain, rest won't lose a smile off their face. Seats vary between comfort and sporty based on the variant one opts for. In general, every seat is comfortable and to an extent sporty with emphasis on comfort.
The tech kit is on par with its competition and in certain areas, ahead of the competition. This is with respect to the way the implementation is done and the user interaction is programmed. Simple, logical and intuitive. The heads-up display is a must have and the digital drivers info display imho is a nice touch but not a must have.
If one is worried is about the battery of switches on the centre console, they are logically laid out and each of them have their purpose. They justify their exsistence and while using, fall in hand easily.
What I sorely miss is the "climate control" rotary knob (F30 and previous gen owners will understand what I mean) on the center console which independent from the HVAC controls could be used to regulate the air temperature from the vents. Earlier, it was possible to either have warm or cold air (for any particular temperature) by rotating this dial. Although, this might never see any use in India, for regions with proper winter, this is a boon.
Finally, will I exchange it for my F30? Well.... May be! I might have to because of the emission norms and in the future possible entry ban into cities for cars older than Euro 6 norms. It is like upgrading smart phones these days. One does not really need to do so yet many of us do. Personally, I am satisfied with the F30 and it fits all my current needs. Also, cars like any other utility product, is environmentally friendly when one uses it to the fullest and recycles.
For those looking to upgrade from F30, move away from other brands to BMW or want to own a BMW, you won't regret your choice with G20.
It is heart warming to see that BMW is committed to maintaining the 3 series and developed it with this much committment, in this era of SUVs. |
