Final ICE VW Golf debuts with buttons, more power and massive PHEV range boost. Hybrid has an electric range of 100 km.

Facelifted 2025 Golf Mk8.5 goes on sale in Europe this spring.

The range kicks off with a pair of mild-hybrid 1.5s, one making 114 hp (116 PS) and the other 147 hp (150 PS), but both badged eTSI and driving the front wheels through a seven-speed DSG. If you want those engines with a six-speed manual you lose the mild-hybrid tech and the ‘e’ from the eTSI badge, but the power outputs stay the same.

Next up are the PHEVs, and if you’ve followed the introduction of Europe’s new VW Tiguan and Passat you’ll know what’s coming. The entry-level eHybrid plug-in pumps out the same 201 hp (204 PS) as before while the sportier GTE makes 268 hp (272 PS), both hooked up to a six-speed DSG and driving the front wheels. The GTE’s power figure is up 26 hp (27 PS) on last year’s, but of more interest is the PHEV’s vastly improved range. The battery size has increased from 10.6 kWh to 19.7 kW (and the charging rate from 3.6 kW to 11 kW to keep pace), extending the EV driving range from 38 miles (61 km) to 62 miles (100 km).

Diesel still makes an appearance, though VW has made no attempt to improve either of the two available oil burners. The base 2.0 TDi sends its 114 hp (116 PS) through a six-speed manual, while the more powerful TDI’s 147 hp (150 PS) mill is hooked up to a seven-speed DSG. Like all of the Golfs available at launch, both are exclusively front-wheel drive.

The Golf's new plug-in hybrid powertrains offer increased power and an electric range of around 100 km and are additionally equipped with a DC fast charging function. The 48V mild hybrid drives are particularly attractive for drivers who don't have a charging case at home.












2025 VW Golf GTI drops manual but gains more power.

The refreshed Golf GTI now boasts 262 horsepower and an improved infotainment system, but it has lost the manual gearbox option.

Whereas the Mk8 Golf GTI offered drivers 241 hp (180 kW/245 PS), the updated Mk8.5 will offer them 261 hp (195 kW/265 PS) in Europe, which ought to please enthusiasts.

While the additional power will certainly excite buyers, owners are likely to be most pleased with the interior updates in the GTI. Like the rest of the lineup, the car receives an enhanced 10.2-inch infotainment system with convenient access to air conditioning and seat heating controls.

New VW Golf 2025: production started in Germany.

VW has announced the start of updated series production of the eighth generation Golf at the Wolfsburg plant, bringing technical and visual advances.
The first vehicle, a Golf Style in anemone blue metallic, rolled off the assembly line today, marking nearly 50 years since the first Golf was produced at the same site.
The new version stands out for its modified front design and new LED headlights. For the first time, the Volkswagen logo on the radiator is also illuminated, a first for Volkswagen vehicles in Europe.
The interior of the vehicle has been completely revitalized, with a new infotainment system that includes a 12.9-inch touchscreen and illuminated touch controls for temperature and volume.
The vehicle also incorporates state-of-the-art digital instruments and a multifunction steering wheel with built-in IDA voice assistant, which includes ChatGPT functionality to control various car systems and access information online.
In terms of powertrain, in addition to the well-known TSI, TDI and the eTSI mild hybrids, the Golf update introduces two new plug-in hybrids with an electric range of more than 100 km and a combined range of around 1,000 km, as well as a DC fast charging function.

Volkswagen Golf. Hybrid will replace diesel.

In March 2023, Volkswagen revealed that it was developing conventional non-plug-in hybrid (HEV) engines, which would be inserted between micro-hybrid (MHEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) engines under the hood of its "small models". According to our sources, the Golf will be affected, and the arrival of this unprecedented level of electrification for the compact car will mean the disappearance of diesel from the catalog. The Volkswagen Golf Hybrid will have the Toyota Corolla Hybrid and Honda Civic e:HEV as its main rivals.

The arrival of a hybrid engine under the bonnet of the Golf could be part of a career extension of its eighth and current generation, launched in 2019, while upcoming changes to European regulations (CAFE and Euro 7) will lower the authorised emission thresholds for new cars and the market is not electrifying as quickly as manufacturers and legislators had hoped.

The Golf 9 will be exclusively electric and should be based on the German group's future SSP modular platform, but this is delayed.
