Hyundai introduces Ioniq, offering choice of three electrified powertrains

Hyundai is about to introduce IONIQ, allegedly the first car to offer a choice of three electrified powertrains.
Quote:
1. Electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid powertrains available in a single body type, a world first
2. The IONIQ breaks hybrid stereotype by delivering entertaining drive alongside class-leading fuel economy and appealing design
3. Global launch set for January 2016 in Korea, followed by Geneva and New York auto shows, an important step as Hyundai Motor works to be global green car market leader

Hyundai Motor has announced the name of its advanced, alternative-fuel compact vehicle due for launch in 2016: the Hyundai IONIQ [pronunciation: aɪ|ɑ:nɪk]. The car will be available with electric, plug-in gasoline/electric hybrid, or gasoline/electric hybrid powertrain – the first car from any manufacturer to offer customers these three powertrain options in a single body type

Based on an exclusive new platform, made specifically for the car’s multi-powertrain options, the IONIQ chassis is optimized to deliver responsive handling while remaining efficient in each of its three powertrain configurations. In its fully-electric (EV) form, the IONIQ is powered by a high capacity, ultra-efficient lithium ion battery. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version combines a fuel-efficient energy with battery power obtained by charging the car with electricity, boosting its range while cutting its emissions. Finally, the hybrid (HEV) utilizes the gasoline engine and motion of the car to charge the on-board battery, which returns enhanced efficiency by supplementing the engine’s power.

Hyundai Motor is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of hybrid vehicles and is committed to a future vehicle line-up comprising low- to zero-emission vehicles. This latest leap forward builds on Hyundai Motor’s heritage of world-first environmental developments. In 2013, Hyundai Motor became the first car manufacturer to mass-produce a hydrogen-fueled vehicle, the Tucson Fuel Cell (ix35 Fuel Cell in some markets)

Following its world premiere in Korea in January, the IONIQ is due to be shown at the Geneva International Motor Show, followed by the New York Auto Show, both in March 2016

In Nov-2013, I saw this car in an autoshow, at Kuala Lumpur. Here are some pics I had managed. Looks quite good. It will be interesting to see how this actually looks, once released:-

Re: Hyundai introduces Ioniq, offering choice of three electrified powertrains

Hyundai has revealed key details and images of the Ioniq. 53% of the car is made of high-strength steel that has been combined with aluminium to provide a lightweight, but strong structure. Non-structural parts like the bonnet, tailgate and suspension components have been made from aluminium.

Thanks KomS_CarLog for the information.

An electric vehicle is always interesting. Do you know when this car could be launched in India?

Secondly, how is the performance of the EV and PHEV cars? Do they have adequate torque, pickup, gradability and speed?

Re: Hyundai introduces Ioniq, offering choice of three electrified powertrains

The Ioniq trio (hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric) have made their debut at the Geneva Motor Show. This is a real game changer for Hyundai:

Internatonal oil prices may be at very low levels currently, but I believe this is just the right time for Hyundai to step up their electric game.

It's a pity that we in India may not get even one of these three any time soon. Even if we do, it may be a CBU and hence price itself out of contention.

Hyundai would do well to explore the option of assembling the Ioniq plug-in hybrid in India from CKD kits. With an electric range of ~ 50 km from its lithium ion polymer battery pack, and the 105 PS 1.6-litre 4-cylinder Kappa petrol engine (running on the highly efficient Atkinson cycle) taking over after that, this would be ideally suited for India.

Cars like these are primarily for the self-driven, and if Hyundai can assemble the plug-in hybrid in India and price it in the territory of the Elantra, it's sure to find enough takers. The typical city user can drive it to work and back home during the week without spending a single paisa on fuel. And he/she can just tank up and hit the highway with family/friends on weekends.

The locally assembled Camry hybrid is a big success (despite low numbers typical of the D2 sedan segment) and outsells its petrol counterpart by a big margin. This should provide enough indication to Hyundai that there is a market for the Ioniq hybrid & plug-in hybrid in India.

Re: Hyundai introduces Ioniq, offering choice of three electrified powertrains

Hyundai is likely to bring its flagship - Ioniq to India in 2017. Would be more expensive than the upcoming Nissan's Leaf , but Hyundai wants to showcase the Hybrid as a statement to being present in the EV segment with cutting edge technology.
