Volkswagen delivered 10.8 million cars in 2018, eyes world No.1 spot

BERLIN: Volkswagen Group said on Friday its passenger car deliveries rose 0.9 percent last year to a record 10.83 million, putting it neck-and-neck with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi in the race to be the world's biggest carmaker.

Quote:

Volkswagen said the VW brand delivered 6.24 million vehicles last year, while premium brands Audi and Porsche posted registrations of 1.81 million and 256,000 vehicles respectively.

Volkswagen Group said December deliveries fell 8.4 percent, to 916,200 vehicles, from 999,900 a year earlier.
Volkswagen Group said December deliveries fell 8.4 percent, to 916,200 vehicles, from 999,900 a year earlier.

Rivals Toyota Motor and Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi have not released 2018 registration figures, but the Franco-Japanese alliance sold 10.6 million cars in 2017 and racked up sales of 5.54 million cars in the first half of 2018.

Toyota last month released a forecast for total global sales of 10.55 million cars last year, but has yet to confirm official numbers.

This makes Audi the third biggest selling premium brand behind BMW, which delivered 2,125,026 cars and leader Mercedes-Benz, which sold 2.31 million passenger cars.

Volkswagen said the ongoing trade dispute with the United States had dampened the business climate in China, its most important market, over the second half of 2018.

Volkswagen's head of sales, Christian Dahlheim, said in a webcast on Friday that he expected demand in China to remain stable in 2019, although the first quarter would be challenging.

Separately, Dahlheim said the German carmaker did not foresee a significant financial impact in 2019 from the implementation of the new WLTP emissions standard, which cost the company 1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) in 2018.

Volkswagen Group said December deliveries fell 8.4 percent, to 916,200 vehicles, from 999,900 a year earlier.

December group deliveries to China dropped by 12.5 percent year-on-year, the Wolsburg-based carmaker said, adding deliveries also fell by 5.6 percent in Europe and by 3.4 percent in the United States.

In Q1 2019 , the Premium executive cars' market share increased from 72% in Q1 2018 to 75%, despite the double-digit drops recorded by BMW and Audi. Mercedes was the only one of the three to drive growth.

  • In November and since the beginning of the year, unit sales increased in the three major sales markets: China, Germany and the United States.
  • “With convincing products and the impetus from our model offensive with compact cars and SUVs, we have started the year-end spurt with confidence. In November, we presented the Maybach GLS, the first SUV model from our exclusive Mercedes-Maybach brand. For our customers, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS combines the advantages of the popular GLS with the luxury of a high-end Saloon that Maybach customers are used to. Since the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Saloon was launched in 2015, more than 45,000 units of this model alone have been delivered to customers all over the world,” stated Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and of Mercedes-Benz AG responsible for Marketing & Sales.

Re: The Worldwide Automotive Industry: Sales, Trends, Top Sellers & Challenges

What a bad year 2020 has been for the global automotive industry. The only consolation for car-makers comes from the fact there are industries and businesses (aviation, hospitality, small scale entrepreneurs, etc.) that fared far worse.

In the United States, it's the usual Ford-Toyota-Chevrolet that finished the year on top. When it comes to individual models, F-Series still led the way followed by the Chevy Silverado and the Ram Pick-up. It's amazing to see how SUVs, crossovers and trucks are rapidly climbing up the order pushing the sedans out. Look at the Accord, a once top-seller to see how far this trend has caught up already.

Re: The Worldwide Automotive Industry: Sales, Trends, Top Sellers & Challenges

I recently wrote an article on Tesla & Ferraris 2020 results. One thing that really jumped out was Tesla's current market cap of $820 billion. However when you back the money Tesla makes selling regulatory credits out of their profitability, Ferrari actually makes more money selling 1/500th the number of cars than Tesla does. Ferrari's market cap is 1/20th Teslas.
