Here's Why Automakers Are Making the Surprising Switch to Bigger Engines

http://fortune.com/2016/10/14/automakers-cars-bigger-engines-emissions/

* “We’re reaching the limits of downsizing”

* These mini-motors sailed through official lab tests conducted—until now—on rollers at unrealistically moderate temperatures and speeds. Carmakers, regulators and green groups knew that real-world CO2 and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions were much higher, but the discrepancy remained unresolved.

* In future “downsizing will mean you take a smaller engine and add an electric motor to it.”

Re: The Worldwide Automotive Industry: Sales, Trends, Top Sellers & Challenges

Volkswagen posts global September sales growth.

Volkswagen Group brands experienced a 7.1% increase in deliveries in September, one year since the emissions scandal rocked the world’s largest car maker.
Quote:
A global year-to-date growth of 2.4% was supported by large gains in central and eastern Europe, as well as the Asia Pacific region and in particular China, which grew by 10.7% across the year. A growth of 3.5% occurred in Europe, including a 2.1% growth in Germany, while a 1.1% decline was posted in North America across the year
Quote:
Volkswagen as a brand bore the brunt of the backlash, with UK sales down by 14.1% on September 2015, although Audi’s sales grew by 9.4%, Porsche’s by 12.7% and Skoda’s by 10.37%. Despite the shrinkage, the Golf and Polo maintained their positions in the UK’s top 10 best-selling cars in September.

Re: The Worldwide Automotive Industry: Sales, Trends, Top Sellers & Challenges

In US, Tesla Model S deliveries trump BMW 7-Series and Mercedes E-Class combined.

Quote:
Specifically, it sold 9,156 units of the Model S, while sales of the 7-Series and S-Class were 3,634 and 3,138 units respectively. So, for now, Elon Musk’s all-electric saloon is the undisputed king of the large exec segment.

Re: The Worldwide Automotive Industry: Sales, Trends, Top Sellers & Challenges

But the large exec/luxury sedan segment is now dwindling in overall size, as is the outright-sportscar one, given the large shift all over the world but esp in the usa to suv-s,whether b-o-f or not, plush and 'sporty' cuv-s, and even huge luxury/lifestyle pickup 'trucks'?

Funny, isn't it, how Tesla trumps (pun intended) all-comers in this large-sedan segment in the usa, yet does nothing but lose money on each Model S sold ?!

The main auto oem-s have mostly desisted from full-ev-s thus far largely because there's just no money to be made, even now: least of all in the usa, what with low-gas prices and taxes. BUT they're readying ev-s for the markets where that will, already by 2019/20 or so, not be true: China and Europe. The latter are going to see massive public and state support for hybrids and ev-s pretty soon, in fact are already doing so, esp China and Germany too. Tesla's loss-making-but-pioneering is over, now the real ev race starts, and NOT in the usa. i.e., Tesla's chances as a financially-viable auto oem are bleak, once the ev race does in earnest?

I was quite surprised at the number of S-Cross's sold in the UK. WIth a black grill, it looked a lot better. The 1.4 boosterjet Vitara is also getting popular

Re: The Worldwide Automotive Industry: Sales, Trends, Top Sellers & Challenges

Europe and Americas apart, lets look at a country which can boast of almost equal power if not more than both these regions put together.. mainly because it's a melting pot of culture having people from Europe, America, Africa, Middle-East etc (Ashkenazim, Sephardim & Mizrahim). Israel has always caught my interest and its buying preferences are more or less like those of any other arid region - lots of 4x4's or soft-roaders and tendency to choose reliability over all else.

Seems to be dominated by Hyundai & Kia for many of the months in 2016, with the Sportage (Kia) and Tucson (Hyundai) selling a lot among them. I'm not surprised, Hyundai, like in Australia has found a lot of love in Israel. I've read stories of the Getz being used as a civilian-army local transport as well as to ferry supplies/arms due to its incredibly tough-build and reliability (most looked mint after carrying heavy loads over dusty terrain).

Other brands like Skoda, Honda, Toyota, Ford, Suzuki, Fiat, Citroen etc which are usually seen rounding off the other positions from 3-10 reminds me much of our own market.. albeit slightly different in terms of positioning.

Re: The Worldwide Automotive Industry: Sales, Trends, Top Sellers & Challenges

Based on data released by the OICA (International Organization of Automotive Constructors), the British site CarKeys made a compilation of the vehicles manufactured worldwide in 2016.

As expected China talkes the lead, with significant 24,500,000 copies produced and that is near to double than that of USA.

Europe figures peg at 20 million units. Separately, Germany took the best out there, with more than 6 million.

India emerges strong and beats Russia and Brazil, manufactures 4,100,000 copies.

Quietly surprised to see Iran manufacture close to a million cars a year. Guess they need to burn all that oil they produce!
