Guide: First-time car ownership in the USA

Hi Folks,
Need some advice. Please forget my posts on the other thread on buying a motorcycle- although hope to buy one next year. I'm planning to get a used car in the next 2-3 weeks.

A couple of questions I had:
1. Is shift.com a good site to check used cars?
2. What value does the inspection carry from Carmax/Shift carry? I'm inclined to get a car checked by a mechanic, but how do I get that arranged? My friend mentioned that there's push-back from the dealers when you mention this.
3. Which the good Credit Union to get a loan in the SF Bay Area(preferably South Bay)? I'm on a student visa and have a good credit score with my credit cards.
4. Is buying insurance from AAA advisable? I'm 24 and I want to avoid high fees.
