re: VAG's emission fraud - VW cheats in emission test

Volkswagen could sell off its sub brands to for survival in the longer run.

Bugatti, Lamborghini and Ducati being the prime suspects. If the going gets really tough, Bentley isn't very safe either.

Quote:
In short, Dieselgate will likely leave Volkswagen with two options. Either close down/hibernate its ultra-luxury brands or sell them, with the second choice being preferable
Quote:
Well, the most obvious answer would be a carmaker from China, as the Middle Kingdom's expansion in the automotive business has become even more evident in recent years, while most other Westerners have battles of their own to fight. The Chinese are still testing the waters with MG Motor, now a subsidiary of the Shanghai-based SAIC Motor, and Volvo Cars, which is wholly owned by the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, along with The London Taxi Company.

The two Chinese carmakers aren't the only ones looking for expansion in the West, as BYD Auto would probably feel like a kid in a candy store with either one of VW's prized luxury brands, despite its association with Daimler. Plus, BYD has enough cash on hand to buy Lamborghini, Bugatti and Ducati in bulk, which would be a better alternative to individual spin-offs anyway

re: VAG's emission fraud - VW cheats in emission test

The first peer-reviewed estimate of the health effects of VW's shenanigans in the US has been published. Key points are:
  • Over the sales period (2008–2015), the excess emissions will cause 59 early deaths in the US.
  • Health effects include ~31 cases of chronic bronchitis, ~34 hospital admissions, ~120 000 minor restricted activity days, ~210 000 lower respiratory symptom days, and ~33 000 days of increased bronchodilator usage.
  • When monetizing premature mortality using EPA-recommended data, a social cost of ~$450m over the sales period.
  • If no recall is made we estimate that the existing affected vehicles will cause ~140 early deaths from 2016, with a monetized cost of ~$910m. However, if the vehicles are recalled and brought into compliance by the end of 2016 then 93% of these deaths and 92% of the costs can be avoided.

The last point above is important - the worst impact of the additional pollution is yet to come. That fact is likely to give the EPA and lawmakers some teeth in enforcing the recall, particularly amongst owners who fear a loss of vehicular performance.

An interesting point of comparison made is:
Quote:
We estimate the vehicles of concern will have driven 40.5 billion km from 2008 to the end of 2015, which implies approximately 280 accident fatalities over this time period for a fleet of the size of the VW light duty diesel vehicles considered here when using average US fatality rates. Per kilometer driven, the air pollution death rate from the excess NOx emissions is therefore ~20% of the accident fatality rate for an average US passenger car.

In India, the 1.2, 1.5 and 1.6 TDI engines are the bread-and-butter mass market engines, with the next step up being the 2.0 TDI. So, basically any VAG diesel, provided its not one of those much older Pumpe Düse (PD) engines in the really old Škodas.

Seeing this article, as far as India is concerned, it seems like it might be easier to list out which VAG engines/models aren't affected!

@Mods - maybe its time to rename the thread to "VAG cheats in diesel emissions globally"?

The above phrase is the perfect title. The cars are not substantially adding to the existing nox levels. They are just cheating!!!

I was just reading the thread on mileage on Indian cars and how VW simply beats the competition in fuel economy. Life would have been so much different for these owners had it not been for the scandal.

Feels so sorry for VW. The bad news just keeps pouring in.
Hope they survive.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency has issued a new set of allegations against Volkswagen claiming that so-called emissions defeat software has been found in the company's 3.0-liter TDI V6 diesel engines. This is a completely different engine than the 2.0 TDI that has already been identified as an emissions cheater. In addition to VW, the EPA has included Audi and Porsche in this notification (model years 2014 through 2016).

Vehicles sold in the United States with this engine include the 2014 VW Touareg, 2015 Porsche Cayenne, and 2016 Audi A6, A7, A8L and Q5. The EPA says there are 10,000 vehicles currently on the road with this second defeat device, along with an unknown number of 2016 models either on dealer lots or in the driveways of consumers.

VW's 3.0-liter TDI, like the 2.0 TDI that was found to circumvent US regulations, has code in its computer specifically written to intentionally put the vehicle's engine into a mode that allows it to meet exhaust requirements. When the vehicle is unhooked from testing equipment, it will go back into a mode that emits nine-times higher nitrogen oxide emissions than is allowable under US law.

re: VAG's emission fraud - VW cheats in emission test

Bad news for VW as EPA claimed that newer models of Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche vehicles with model years between 2014 and 2016 contain the devices.

Cars affected by the latest claims include the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg; 2015 Porsche Cayenne; and 2016 Audi A6 Quattro, A7 Quattro, A8, A8L, and Q5. There also are a number of 2016 models covered by the notice, the EPA said.

re: VAG's emission fraud - VW cheats in emission test

Here we go again.. I have been telling for sometime that the conclusion is a bit shady. Below screenshot gives more details on how they are cheating. Exactly 1 second after the regulation cycle is completed the timing and other control strategies are changed illegally.

@ Mods- Can we now change the title to Volkswagen and Audi cheat in US Emissions Test AGAIN ...

Suggest taking "America" out of the title completely, as it quickly became known that it is a worldwide problem! In fact, it is not just a Volkswagen problem even.

re: VAG's emission fraud - VW cheats in emission test

Interesting to note that VW denied the cheating charges immediately. If VW is at fault again, it will shatter shareholders and customers confidence in VW management. They can't keep claiming some rouge engineering team cheated again!

If true, all these vehicles will probably be recalled:
Volkswagen Touareg (MY 2014)
  • Porsche Cayenne (MY 2015)
  • Audi A6 Quattro (MY 2016)
  • Audi A7 Quattro (MY 2016)
  • Audi A8 (MY 2016)
  • Audi Q5 (MY 2016)

re: VAG's emission fraud - VW cheats in emission test

This is going to be a earth shattering news for their shareholders and heart breaking for those who spent so much and bought a Porsche Cayenne and Audi A8/A7. Bad news just keeps pouring in, VAG are caught in their own cobweb. They made a very bold/stupid move a few years back and it is going to cost them a lot in the years to come.

re: VAG's emission fraud - VW cheats in emission test

The official response from VW is a little bit different this time. http://www.volkswagenag.com/content/...lungnahme.html

Quote:
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) informed Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft on Monday that vehicles with V6 TDI engines had a software function which had not been adequately described in the application process. Volkswagen AG wishes to emphasize that no software has been installed in the 3-liter V6 diesel power units to alter emissions characteristics in a forbidden manner.

Volkswagen will cooperate fully with the EPA clarify this matter in its entirety.

re: VAG's emission fraud - VW cheats in emission test

Volkswagen's troubles just got a whole lot bigger.
Volkswagen said on Tuesday it found data “inconsistencies” on carbon dioxide emissions for 800,000 more cars, the latest sign of trouble for Europe’s biggest automaker, already reeling from an emissions scandal.

Volkswagen said it faces about 2 billion euros ($2.19 billion) in economic risks from the newly disclosed issue, which mostly affects small diesel engines and one gasoline one. They are unrelated to U.S. regulators’ allegations on Monday that larger diesel engines mostly used in Porsche and Audi sports utility vehicles were designed to cheat emissions tests.

Source Reuters- http://fortune.com/2015/11/03/volksw...sel-emissions/

Volkswagen admitted in September that it used defeat devices aimed at fooling emissions tests in 11 million of its diesel vehicles but now its gasoline models are implicated in the scandal as well. http://www.engadget.com/2015/11/03/v...missions-lied/
