Rumour: Mitsubishi Motors to exit the US market

Mitsubishi Motors Corp , faced with declining demand in the United States and an expiring union contract at its only plant in North America, is considering ending U.S. auto production. Will now shift focus to Asian Markets.

Quote:
The proposed withdrawal from the Normal, Illinois plant was part of Mitsubishi Motors' strategic shift to the growing Asian market
We will have to await for Mitsubishi to announce its Indian road map when the above plan unfolds.

re: Rumour: Mitsubishi Motors to exit the US market

As long as Mitsubishi Motors continues its tie up with a slow Co like HMFCL, I do not see any long term/exciting strategy coming up soon.

Moreover, the Mitsubishi Group has been reducing its focus on the automotive division over time which could mean a lot of things.

Re: Rumour: Mitsubishi Motors to exit the US market

Hardly a surprise. I'm only wondering why it took them so long.

Similar to Suzuki (which also exited the biggest car market in the world), Mitsubishi:

- Has ZERO brand value in the USA. The only people who consider a Mitsubishi are those who cannot afford anything else.

- Offers credit to anything with a pulse.

- Has to rely on heavy discounting & cheap pricing to sell cars.

- Doesn't have a modern, competitive product line.

- Had a monthly sales average of a pitiful 6,000 in 2014. To put things in perspective, Toyota sold over 20 lakh cars in the USA last year.

I don't think Americans are even going to notice the brand's absence.

The report in Reuters speaks about ending the production of Mitsubishi cars in US and not exiting the US market as the title of this thread states. Can this be corrected?

The rumours of Mitsubishi exiting the US market has been around for a few years now.

Considering the EVO itself was on it's last iteration , I guess only the enthusiasts will miss it.

Re: Rumour: Mitsubishi Motors to exit the US market

With no buyers, Mitsubishi Motors to shut its US plant; job cuts imminent.

Quote:
Japan's Mitsubishi Motors has started preparing for the closure of its sole US factory after failing to find a buyer for the high-cost auto plant,
Quote:
The company announced plans in late July to end production at the plant, saying the decision was prompted by low volumes rather than high labour costs or a stronger dollar, which makes importing cars more profitable

Quote:
If a potential buyer emerges by November, Mitsubishi Motors would drop plans for the job cuts and negotiate a sale
