Spied: 2017 Toyota Prius (4th Gen)

2017 Toyota Prius;

As we see in the video below the Prius mule is heavily camouflaged, but the silhouette of the front apron definitely point towards the Prius appearance we all know of

Toyota plans to introduce this in 2016 as a 2017 model

Re: Spied: 2017 Toyota Prius (4th Gen)

Toyota has finally unveiled the 2016 Prius for the North American market, an an event conducted in Las Vegas.

Based on Toyota's new modular chassis-based global architecture which the company has dubbed as "TNGA", the new Prius's platform is lighter, sturdier and has a lower center of gravity. Coupled with a double-wishbone rear suspension, Toyota claims that this makes the new Prius more fun to drive.

Quote:
But in addition to this promise of fun, Toyota has kept up with the Prius' mission of efficiency, claiming a 10 percent gain in MPG on "core models," according to the press release. If the outgoing model's 50 MPG EPA rating is anything to go by, expect a 55 MPG rating on the new one. There will also be a new Eco model that Toyota says is to be unveiled down the road, with, "an even greater improvement" in fuel efficiency.

Toyota also says it's boosting the safety roster on the 2016 Prius with the introduction of Toyota Safety Sense, a suite of driver assistance electronics such as pedestrian detection, lane departure warning and prevention and adaptive cruise control. The Prius, thanks to the new platform architecture, is the first of the company's models to benefit from this safety tech package that Toyota says will spread throughout most of its lineup by the end of 2017.

I was seriously considering buying the next gen Prius once it is launched in Japan. My daily office commute is 80km and the FE makes a lot of sense for me. As practical as I am, I am not sure I can live with the absolutely whacky rear styling! But then, my first car was a Ritz. So, may be!

Talk about taking something ugly and making it uglier!
Toyota has really outdone it.
Why can't manufacturer design hybrids stylish like every other car in their stable?

Re: Spied: 2017 Toyota Prius (4th Gen)

That rear is just outrageous. It looks like the strange concepts that manufacturers used to make in the early 2000's. They tried to make it futuristic like a space ship, and ended up with something out of the Weird and Wacky Mods thread.

Re: Spied: 2017 Toyota Prius (4th Gen)

On second thoughts, I guess this was expected after Toyota okayed the hideous Mirai for mass production. If this is the design language for their future line-up, I guess I will shop elsewhere!

By far the ugliest car I've seen come across, even the Aztec looks like an Aston when compared to this Monstrosity. I thought that nothing can be as bad as a Mirai but boy I was wrong. It seems like Toyota is using its accountants to design new cars.

The front and interiors look cool especially the gear lever. But the rear, totally funky and offbeat. I kinda like it.

Re: Spied: 2017 Toyota Prius (4th Gen)

Prius changed from a neutral design to this polarized design.
The design is surely Mirai inspired.

The interiors are simply outstanding for a Toyota.

What won't change though it's practicality. The Prius is simply practical and a very efficient car. I just hope they could somehow localise the Prius in India.

India-bound 2016 Toyota Prius launched in Japan

Prius heading for India -
Quote:
The 2016 Toyota Prius is now available for sale in Japan, which is the first market to get the next generation hybrid. Prices start from 2.4 million yen (INR 13.09 Lakhs) to 3,39 million yen (INR 18.51 Lakhs). Pre-orders total 60,000 vehicles in Japan, and Toyota expects to sell 12,000 units per month.
Quote:
The new Prius is available in four trim levels: “E”,”S”, “A”, and “A Premium”. Bi-Beam LED headlamps and smart keyless entry are standard on all grades, while the Toyota Safety Sense P collision avoidance and mitigation package, is standard on all “A” and “A Premium” grades.

There’s also a “Touring Selection” option for “S” and “A” trims, which comes with features like 215/45 R17 tires, aluminum wheels, and synthetic leather seats. The top-end A Premium gets genuine leather seats and leather wrapped steering wheel.

Power is sourced from a 1.8-liter four-cylinder DOHC engine that makes 97 bhp at 5,200 rpm and 142 Nm of torque at 3,600 rpm from its naturally aspirated engine. It is paired to an electric motor which sources power from a nickel metal hydride battery that contributes a further 71 bhp. Customers going for the “Touring Selection” option can spec the E-Four electronic four-wheel drive system.
It is also confirmed to debut in the Indian market at the Auto Expo 2016 in February

Re: Spied: 2017 Toyota Prius (4th Gen)

Did get a chance to test drive '2016 Toyota Prius' last month. The new design looks edgy and distinct. Drives well, decent power, good initial pick up mainly due to the boost it gets from the electric motor with the battery support. Easy handling, very light steering, low center of gravity - no need to think twice before doing an abrupt movement.

Available in two variants (here in Dubai), ‘Dynamic’ and ‘Iconic’ where Dynamic being the basic and the latter with full options. Iconic comes with a standard 7 SRS Airbags.

Engine: 1.8L (2ZR-FXE), 4-Cyl. In-Line,Twin Cam 16-Valve With VVT-I
Dimensions (mm): L4,540 - W1,760 - H 1,470
Fuel Tank Capacity: 43 Litres
Tyre Size: 195/65 R15
Transmission: E-CVT

Uses regenerative braking for generating electricity and the output is stored in a battery, which is beneath the rear seat. There are two types of batteries available 1. Lithium-Ion Batteries 2. Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries. Middle East gets only Nickel Metal Hybrid batteries due to its heat resistant nature. The hybrid batteries are charged continuously when braking and decelerating; therefore, there is no need to plug in a power cord – resulting in fewer stops for gasoline fill-up. Battery Life is said to be over 10 years and it comes with a standard warranty of 8 years on Battery and the ECU. 95% of the 3.5 million Prius’ sold since its launch (1997) are still on road.

Safety features include pre-collision braking system, lane departure alert that also steers you back into the lane, adaptive cruise control & rear cruise traffic alert system – which is very useful in reversing the car. In addition, there is an intelligent parking assist system with line demarcations for easy & accurate parking.

Few of the additional premium features include “Entune” premium JBL audio, wireless charging option etc.

The display unit shows when the electric motor is consuming power from the battery and when it is charging. The process keeps fluctuating as and when you apply the brake or just remove your leg from the accelerator pedal. The ECU is so effective that it controls the whole system of charging the battery efficiently so that very little energy gets wasted.

In terms of mileage – Toyota claims the car gives you a mileage of 26.1 Km/L, which is 3.8 L / 100 Kms. The Fuel tank capacity is 43 Litres and is expected to drive over 1000 Kms in a full tank. This is expected to be more in city driving conditions vs the freeways. In city conditions one tends to apply brakes or slowdown the car more frequently than the freeways which increases the battery charging time and hence more mileage.

Generous boot with 420 liters of capacity.
