Rolls Royce starts testing AWD system for its upcoming SUV, the Cullinan

This is the 1st picture of Rolls' SUV going into stage one of testing;

Rolls Royce starts testing AWD system for its upcoming SUV, the Cullinan-rr1.jpg

^ This early engineering mule has a Phantom body (shortened) & a prominent rear wing.

While the mule looks nothing like the production model, Rolls-Royce said it hints at the size of their upcoming "high-sided, all-terrain motor car."

Can't say about others, but I find it one of most ugliest cars, ever moved out of RR stable.
Firstly it doesn't fit in as a luxury car (shortened) and doesn't have an SUV stance.

Shortening wheelbase, raising ground clearance and adding that ugly spoiler at the back (not to forget those trying to look mean blackened wheels), doesn't make it a true blue luxury SUV.

Maybe RR should not take it as ego war and should continue at what they are best and leave the SUV territory to LR.

I don't think this is the actual body. They may have put on a fake body to test the mechanicals and the actual design of the SUV will be anything bit this.

You are absolutely right. This is just a mule that is Project Cullinan, which will eventually morph into their SUV model. This is primarily being used for testing the suspension system for ride quality.
But the mule gives a hint on the overall size of the upcoming SUV.
Quote:
The car is being used to test the all-wheel drive system of the upcoming people-mover. But it won’t look anything like that in its final form.
Quote:
This early engineering mule, based on a shortened Phantom Series II body, has been created purely to begin the development of an all-wheel drive suspension system that will deliver a ride that will be Effortless … Everywhere. The body may hint at the size of the new car, but it features no design aspects of the eventual high-sided, all-terrain motor car announced by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in February this year.

Guys, i dont understand why is there a confusion as i have already mentioned in the opening post that this is a mule wearing Phantom body parts & is nothing close to the actual production body.

The huge rear wing is to stimulate the impact of extra weight & drag of the upcoming taller SUV.

I also think the boot of this car would be filled with some weights.

re: Rolls Royce starts testing AWD system for its upcoming SUV, the Cullinan

Porsche, Bentley, Jaguar and now Rolls Royce! Why do they all have to sell cars in every segment there is? I was one of those who fell in love with RR's new design language when I set my eyes on the Phantom for the first time and I love the Ghost and the Wraith as well. But this is plain hideous to put it even mildly!

Is it so necessary to give a family face to the SUV? Can RR cars and SUVs not look different?!

What next? Guess Porsche will follow Mercedes with pick-up trucks now. At least they will be the handling ones in the business I guess!!

It's just an engineering mule. It's mainly to test the AWD system and suspension. The final car will look nothing like it. Though, RR should considering handing it over to the Joker for any upcoming Batman movie.

Usually Autobild gets the renders spot on & i believe this render by them is much better looking than the above hippo

re: Rolls Royce starts testing AWD system for its upcoming SUV, the Cullinan

Why are they making an SUV ? any reason ? As much as I hate Ferrari, one of the things I respect them for is their unwavering ability to stay true to their origins and culture of making fine two doored automobiles. A bit of a Rolls Royce admirer died in me when i heard the news of this car. I respect people who value culture/pedigree/origins/roots whatever you really want to call it.

LOL! If the first render was ugly the second render by Autobild is not far behind in ugliness. Looks utter crap. Looks like an RR with raised suspension trying super hard to look like an SUV.

Further, the top headlights give the car a look as if it is "high" on something!!
