McLaren P1 GTR - Confirmed!

Two decades after the F1 GTR's legendary win at LeMans, McLaren has confirmed plans to produce a track-only version of their current flagship, the P1.

Initial reports suggest the car will brush the 1000hp mark and will be sold in very limited runs exclusively to existing P1 owners. Price is estimated to be in the 2 million Euro territory.

Production will commence only once all the 365 road-going P1s roll out of the factory or McLaren Technology Center, as they call it.

LaFerrariXX, watch out!

Re: McLaren P1 GTR - Confirmed!

Here is the first official rendering of the P1 GTR from Mclaren.

I love everything on it except the exhausts. Looks a tad tuner'ish in my opinion, slightly bigger standard ones would look dope!

Re: McLaren P1 GTR - Confirmed!

It will be there, and then not there, just a thin film of what used to be the clutch.

Oh, and that rear wing...perfect place to chop up those pesky vegetables.

Folks might even use it to ferry around the weekly shopping!

The car seen here is an almost-ready design study to whet the appetite of 35 of the 375 P1 road car owners, who’ll be invited to buy the track-only GTR for an estimated £1.9m.

The twin-turbo V8 and electric motor powertrain is tuned from 903bhp to 986bhp – equivalent to 1000PS, or the output of the original Bugatti Veyron. But the P1 GTR isn’t hunting speed records – this is a machine designed for ultimate lap times.

To that end, McLaren has stretched the P1’s front track by 80mm to increase front axle grip. This is further helped by an aggressive front splitter and the slick tyres, worn by 19-inch forged wheels with F1-style centrelock hubs. The inflated wheelarches lead into reshaped radiator ducts, while the all-new rear valance forces the air shooting out from the undertray trackwards to create even more downforce.

Adding to the aero package is a monstrous fixed rear wing in place of the P1 road car’s pop-up spoiler. The GTR does maintain drag-reduction ability to increase straight-line speed, but the wing’s extra width and slimmer supports are mainly intended to ramp up aerodynamic performance.
As the car pictured here is supposedly a design study, McLaren hasn’t yet disclosed the GTR’s increase in downforce over the road car’s record-breaking 600kg total. Even the wing mirrors have been relocated to the windscreen pillars to reduce drag.

The P1 GTR’s dramatic rear is dominated by two bazooka-sized exhaust pipes where the road car makes do with one flame-throwing tailpipe. These pipes are fashioned from a heat-resistant nickle and titanium alloy, and is naturally unsilenced to make the most of the uprated V8’s soundtrack.

Though it won’t make the P1 GTR any faster, the livery is the stuff of McLaren legend – it’s inspired by the looks of the F1 GTR test car, which led on to a Le Mans-winning programme for McLaren in 1995.

America gets its first McLaren P1 GTR

McLaren won't be making a lot of P1 GTRs. Only 35, to be precise. And most of them will likely remain under the company's care, to be transported to specially organized track days. That means you're not likely to see many of them here in the United States, but one fortunate customer recently took delivery of one such track-bound supercar in Northern California.

Decked out in a shade of British Racing Green so deep it looks almost black, with trim in McLaren's signature shade of orange, this particular McLaren P1 GTR was captured while being offloaded from a truck in San Jose a little over a week ago.

Given the location, we'd imagine the vehicle belongs to some Silicon Valley billionaire – which only makes sense, considering that it costs a good $3 million or so. But the location also means local fans should soon see it lapping around Sonoma Raceway and Laguna Seca in due course.

The car looks striking in person, makes the already wild P1 look subtle. The owner is a retired race-car driver. Expect the car to be push to its absolute limits when it eventually hits the tracks.

This is going to be fun to watch on the track.

Here's an interview of the owner with his P1 and P1 GTR. He says himself that he bought the car because he thinks it looks really cool. I love this guy already and I don't care if he got it to spank around a race track or as an investment to flip it soon for a chunky profit, I am just glad he did and what a spec it is!
Also look at the number of Porsche 959s in the background!

McLaren P1 GTR nearly crashes at Laguna Seca, California!

Footage from McLaren GTR private track day at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, California.

One of the factory-owned McLaren P1 GTRs nearly crashed into a concrete barrier at the infamous corkscrew. The car was driven by a professional driver who was reportedly trying to set a lap time for owners to try to match or beat.

Luckily, the driver averts disaster and saves the $3 million car from harm.
