Sinkhole swallows 8 Corvettes at National Museum in Kentucky

A massive sinkhole in western Kentucky opened up below the National Corvette Museum, swallowing eight rare and historic Chevrolet Corvettes that were on display to the public.

Here's the museum's list of cars that went down the hole:

-- a 1962 "Black Corvette"
-- a 1984 PPG pace car
-- a 2009 ZR1 "Blue Devil"
-- the 1992 white "1 Millionth Corvette"
-- a 1993 ruby red "40th Anniversary Corvette"
-- a 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette
-- the 2009 white "1.5 Millionth Corvette"
-- a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder

All this action was caught up on security camera on http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/12/us/nat...eum-cars-fall/

Small risk of being energy independent thanks to shale gas.

re: Sinkhole swallows 8 Corvettes at National Museum in Kentucky

My friend who lives in KY posted this on FB this morning.
Very sad to lose all those iconic cars.
Not to mention damage to property.

Latest update on the rescue operation.

The company has managed to pull out 2 Corvettes, the first to be pulled out of the rubble some 30 feet below - a 2009 "Blue Devil" ZR1 & a 1993 Corvette 40th Anniversary Edition, nicknamed "Ruby," was the second car to get pulled out. Pics attached :

Of the two the former, Bloe Devil managed to start after few attempts, but not the latter.

Wow, even the Devil found these cars worth a closer look! May be Chevy can use this event and create an ad for the next Superbowl event. and one of them is even called "Blue Devil". Is this a coincidence ?

Re: Sinkhole swallows 8 Corvettes at National Museum in Kentucky

I have seen other pictures of this incident on the internet. The floors appear very thin and gave away I guess, though I'm still wondering where the hollow space came from, weren't these found during the construction?

These are man made disasters (heavy usage of ground water by use of water pumps), aided by the extreme weather America is facing these days & the periodic cyclones that bring heavy rains with them.

Basically, as the ground water level goes down so does the soil supporting the structures & these sink holes appear.

You can read more about these on the net, where you would elaborate explanation for the phenomenon.

The last Corvette is pulled out of the sinkhole but it's beyond repairable condition - http://www.autoweek.com/article/2014...n=awdailydrive
