New BMW X1 confirmed for 2015 launch.



New platform and revised engines for smaller, lighter BMW X1, which will make room for new X2 to slot in the range in 2017.

The new X1, known under the codename F48, will abandon the longitudinal engine layout of the existing model for a version of the transverse engine arrangement of the new 2-series Active Tourer.

The next X1 will be slightly smaller externally but offer similar interior space to the first-generation model.

The X1’s slight reduction in overall dimensions will allow BMW to widen the gap between the X1 and X3 in readiness for a new X2 model in 2017.

Power for the new X1 and X2 will come from a range of turbocharged three-cylinder and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

The current generation of the X1 is based on the previous 3-Series platform (E91) and will be replaced by this new X1.The new X1 will be a front-wheel drive crossover and will be based on the Mini and 1 Series platform.
It is likely to have a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is the newly developed three-pot oil burner by the Bavarian automotive manufacturer. The four-cylinder will be the 2.0-litre. All the engines will be turbo-charged like the other BMW engines. The new X1 will be longer and wider than the current generation. The X1 will go on sale in sometime 2016 in global markets and for India it should be sometime around mid or late 2016.

The 2016 BMW X1 (F48) has been caught partially unclad. Cosmetic changes are evidently subtle, but the front bumper has been reworked and the vents appear smaller than those of the current X1. Earlier reports also confirm that the new X1 will be smaller in length, because it has been developed on a different platform.

There is a lot of competition in the luxury small crossover market. And this BMWX1 redesign doesnt look too great as there are other good ones out there. The newly debuted Lexus NX is supposed to be sales buster and it even looks sleek. This X1 will have a very tough time competing with the NX.

They're making this FWD? I'm unpleasantly surprised.

But then, I don't get the point of an X1 anyway. If you want and SUV with offroad capabilities / ground clearance, get an X3 (or better, something Quattro). If you want a sharp-steering, nimble-handling thing to chuck around town or back roads, get a 2, or 3 series if you want some space to go with that. More space, go for the 5. What need does the X1 fill, exactly? Its got less space than a 3, and handles not as great.

2016 BMW X1 pics leaked in China. Sleeker headlamps, slimmer tail lamps and some aggressive styling. Thank God for not merging the headlamps with the grille! Will be interesting to see this in a 7 seater configuration.

I'm betting the hydraulic steering is gone too. Even in the current X1, some variants have it and some have the new electric unit. I think the 28i variants have the hydraulic unit and the 35i variants get the electric one.

New-generation BMW X1 images leaked.








BMW has been testing the new-generation X1 for a while and this is the first time that the X1 will be a front-wheel drive based on the UKL1 architecture shared with the new MINI family and 2 Series range.

The engines, as smaller engines make their way, especially the new three-cylinder 1.5-litre and the four-cylinder 2.0-litre engines. The engine outputs range from 150bhp to 231bhp. The engines link up to an eight-speed Steptronic unit, which is a new development.

The xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system also takes its place in the new BMW X1 in a further developed form. The weight-saving, compact and efficient system uses an electro-hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch to distribute drive between the front and rear axle just as required for the situation at hand. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, an audio system with USB and AUX-in sockets, and the iDrive operating system, whose 6.5-inch display is integrated into the instrument panel in freestanding monitor form.

The new X1 has grown in height compared to its predecessor (+53 millimetres) and BMW claims it has helped increase the spaciousness of the interior. Folding down the standard-fitted 40:20:40 rear seat backrest, which can also be specified in angle-adjustable form as an option, allows load capacity to be expanded to as much as 1,550 litres.

The change of BMW X1 generations also brings significant advances in the field of intelligent connectivity. A new addition to the range of BMW ConnectedDrive features is a BMW Head-Up Display which, as in the larger BMW X models, projects driving-related information directly onto the windscreen.
