Good point, Sir.

The 328i is rear-wheel-drive but the new Cooper S will most definitely be front-wheel-drive. And both cars will be powered by the same 240 odd twin-scroll N20 engine. It's good to see that they're replacing the unreliable Peugeot mill, but will a front-wheel-drive car be able to handle all that torque, e-diff aside? The 1.6 liter 185 horsepower R56 Cooper S torque steered but not uncontrollably. I wonder how the new one will behave under hard acceleration.

And, I'm sorry guys, but a 5 door MINI? I really hate that idea. The whole point of buying a MINI is to have a small fast hatch that's fun to drive and looks good.

The 5 door version won't be anywhere near as good as the original one, and that just spoils the appeal of the MINI.

I don't see larger versions of the Fiat 500 or the VW Beetle or the Citroen DS3, or any other hot hatch, to make it more family friendly, because it defeats the purpose of buying those cars!.

While a 5 door Mini will widen its customer base, the enthusiast may not approve. I for one don't care as long as the 3-door hatch is available. :)

By the way, Fiat's 500 has spawned several body styles in the recent past, including an 'estate' with 3 rows of seats, a 4 door hatch and a sub-compact SUV.

The Fiat 500 does have a L version, with five doors and chubby looks. Even the DS3 has a five door variant. Rest assured, both don't a candle to their respective originals. And to build a five door Beetle, that would be ridiculous. But the Mini's shape will take to five doors with a breeze, so that shouldn't be much of a concern here.

Fiat’s expansion of 500 brand (500L, 500x, 500 L Living etc.) is quite similar to what Mini is doing with the spin-outs like Countryman, Clubman, Paceman etc. Similarly, I hope the original is kept as it is, and the 5-door variant is given a separate identity.

OT: Can you provide a link/picture of the 5-door DS3. I remember seeing only the 2-door convertible and 3-door hatchback. Thanks.

Oh. I didn't know the 500 had a five door version, I just googled it and I think it looks very silly indeed.

The 5 door MINI may look better than that, but it still bothers me a bit.

Agreed that it may bring more customers to MINI ,just like how the Cayenne and the Panamera got Porsche more customers, but I think the MINI will lose its 'coolness' factor.

Er, my bad, there isn't a direct 5 door iteration of the DS3, but it does share it's chassis, architecture and lot of other visual bits with the bigger C3. One can say, it's a slightly exclusive and bolder spin-off of the C3.

Baffled with the not-so-good spy shots came out a few days back, Mini has released its own spy shot, along with a statement – a cheeky one indeed! :)

An MPV based on the new UKL1 platform built by launched and this test mule is being used for development. The back appear to be based on the countryman and the front on the new Cooper S, but we can't really tell for sure. At the back though, we have two doors instead of a hatch, hinged to either side like on a van.
